Default Manyel

Wanting to try a Yellow,non cherry, type and am considering this variety. I grow in larger pots that are 25 gallons or more. Would appreciate any opinions this and and/or other yellows that should do well in the PNW.

Maybe Tania can weigh in on this or if she doesn't see it, maybe PM her..she's in Vancouver and she grows a zillion different varieties. I grew Manyel this year but I'm in Toronto, way different growing zone from you. It's a very fab tomato if you like your tomatoes with some zing to them..not your typical yellow by a long shot. It grew to about 7' for me, however, so I'm not sure it's the best candidate for a container. Some of them had pointy blossom ends towards the later part of the season. I have no clue what causes that but it was interesting.

Default Manyel.....need a large non cherry yellow

Jim,
KBX, a PL variant of Kellog's Breakfast, is an excellent choice. Here's the description on the seeds I received from "gardenmama". the screen name for Martha in se VA. If you PM her I'm pretty sure she would send you some seeds. Just run a search for KBX on the T'ville site for the info to contact her.

"KBX (Kellog's Breakfast Potato Leaf). Indeterminate, 75 days. Discovered in 2003. Potato leaf plants produce large amounts of deep Apricot-Orange beefsteak fruits average 1 pound and are early for such large fruits. More disease tolerant than regular leaf Kellog's Breakfast".

Jim,

Manyel isn't yellow,. it's golden when ripe, and I like it.

But some others that are similar might include:

Dixie Golden Giant ( not giant)
Olga's Yellow Chicken
Indian Moon

Again, all turn gold at maturity and all are pretty much globe shaped which is what Manyel is.

if you want something larger, as in a beefsteak, then there are several choices that are good, but again, most with Yellow in the name turn to gold.

One lucious exception is Lillian's Yellow Heirloom, which is PL and stays yellow at maturity.

So if you want to enlarge what you might like that's one that I can recommend for a pure yellow.

Lots of large beefs that turn to gold, though.

The problem is that I have no way at all of knowing what may or may not do well in your local area. Sigh.

The best yellow I have ever grown was "Buckeye Yellow", solid fruit with small seed cavities, decent production, grew well here in Ky. Don't know about pot production as it is a large plant ; I grow in concrete wire cages.

I lost my seeds when a storm destroyed my Hoop House where I normally work during the season. (Moved seed operation to my basement.)
I am currently searching for some replacement seed. Good Gardenng!

Thanks for all the responses as it helps me make my decision, not only for yellow/gold but other varieties as well. Since I've made my decision to cut back on the number tomatos I will grow I have been frantically searching for something I lost,common sense, in my second year of tomato growing. IE! I'm the only one in my household that eats tomato's,except for cherry types. I only eat them OTV or on sandwiches so smaller 4-8 ounces is the perfect size for me. I'm going through withdrawal pains as I'm really wanting to try Zogola because of Laurels description on her website.
