Promix or somewhat equivalent around DC/MD

Hello all,

I'm visiting a cousin in the DC/MD area and I'd like to set up a small container garden for them. I won't have much time, and I was expecting to find growbags, grow medium (preferably Promix), and heirloom tomatoes and peppers at the nearest Home Depot. Will I?

Check the Premier Horticulture site in their dealer locater option and it should take you right to a source.

Home Depot online has grow bags, some as an online exclusive only. The guy at ours looked at me like I was an alien when I asked if they had any in store.

If Home Depot is your best option, and you wanted to be reasonably certain, you could order from them online now for pickup in store when you get there.

Well, that's exactly what happened! Quite a difference from the Home Depots we have in Ottawa.

Yup. Sometimes I'm googling materials for a project, find the perfect piece, and it's always on the Canadian website. Ours doesn't even list it.

Did your gardening effort go well, other than that? The ship to store option is pretty useful, but only if you have the time.

Online was not an option as I had no time.

I ended up getting Miracle Gro and seedlings from Home Depot. They were quite small - five inches at most.

I got some smartpots from a reseller I found on the smart pot web site. She was gracious enough to tell me a little about gardening in the area and pointed me to a small hardware store where I got a couple of cages, some fertilizer, lime, and compost.

Two tomatoes and three hot peppers. We'll see how they do!

I found that the first wave of plants at Home Depot were tiny. When I went back a couple of weeks later, after the "official" start of our season, the new plants were easily twice the size.

The small ones caught up pretty quickly.

Glad you were able to get what you needed and get your friend set up!

I haven't seen ProMix at Home Depot, however, I can tell you that a nursery in Beltsville, MD, does carry it. Beltsville is about a 15-20 minute drive from the DC-MD line past College Park.

The nursery is called Behnke. I was just there over the weekend and they had lots of it.

If the DC Home Depot is anything like the ones in our area.

The only soils are "miracle" something or other and Vigoro.
No grow bags but a pretty nice, inexpensive selection of pots.
No heirloom tomatoes just early girl and various Beef varieties, health looked OK
I didn't bother looking close at their horrible looking peppers.

Your best bet is to go to any hydroponic store. They usually have grow bags (for weed), promix/sunshine mix (for weed), and a bunch of other stuff ( for weed).

I get half my gardening supplies from hydroponic stores.

Worm castings, Coco Coir, Fertilizer, soil, etc.
