Potato top

I just received a small plastic bag of these tomato seeds. They were sent to me from Doug Oster of the Pittsburgh- Gazette. There is an article at www. post-gazette.com/garden/ The seeds are free so nothing to lose. Does anyone have any experience growing this tomato?

Hi, jackman. Moved this one from the container forum to general discussion. There are a number of threads on Tville about Potato Top, aka Pink Potato Top, aka Limbaugh's Potato Top.

I haven't personally grown it, but just thought I'd mention those akas so you could easily find those opinions as well by doing a search.

tomstrees is a big fan of this variety, and hopefully he'll chime in here.

I sent off to Mr. Oster for some of those last spring and grew a few, but several of mine turned out regular leaf and the potato leaf seedlings did poorly for various reasons of my making and not worth going into since the variety appears to be a normally good one.

However, I sent a few seeds to TomTrees, and like Suze says, he's a huge Potato Top fan. He had great success and has posted fantastic pictures of his Potato Tops.

I'm gonna try again next year from Tom's saved seeds since his did so well and since I owe Mr. Oster return seeds from crown fruit. As you know, that's the deal ... he sends you the seeds free and you send him back seeds saved from your first fruit.

Anyway, I guarantee Tom will chime in with high praises and a link to his thread about this tomato.

Yes, I've grown it, and would be hard pressed to say that it was substantailly better than many other large pink PL varieties that I've grown.

Glenn Drowns at Sandhill also loves it and it's one of the few varieties that he actually includes more than one sentence for in his blurb.

And as was stated above, if you do a search here you'll find other threads on the same topic.

I have raved about it this summer ...
but for good reason ... ITS AWESOME !

I must admit, I've called it "Limbaughs Potato Top" !
I've called it that here, there, everywhere !

PV made a public seed offer early this season, and I
took him up on it ... When I received my packet
the seeds were in a paper envelope labeled
"Limbaughs Potato Top", and then a small blurb about
how seeds are sent out all over the palce, and at the
end of the season every mails their saved seed back,
and where to send them too ~

Anyway, I planted those seeds not knowing what to expect, and to my
suprise I got a PL seedling (true)
and an RL seedling (cross).
I grew out both ...

Both the PL & RL grew into MONSTER plants ...
I mean like more than 6ft tall (for both) and pumping
out 1lb+ perfect slightly ribbed pink beefsteaks !

The flavor of the PL was OUTSTANDING !
The flavor of the RL ... not so much - but I'm sure after some "work" it could turn into something ...

My advice ? Don't get bummed if another leaf type emerges ... if something else comes up and you got the room ? Grow for it ~ Give it plenty of room ... tall wide cages - or a very solid stake(s) ... def. keep an
eye on it when the wind gets strong ... mine toppled over twice due to inclimate weather ...

I don't mind writing this again ...
This variety is worth the write up ~
