Congrats on Jackie, the new pupper!

I know only too well how one's life can be torn apart by the loss of a heart-dog.... The only cure is to get another dog - or two!

Sounds as if you picked a great dog! Love her, enjoy her, and take lots of photos!

I think Annie sent Jackie to you. May you have many happy years together. Dogs have their way of making you focus on something other than the stuff you may be going through or dealing with. Mine does that with me. So I'm very happy to hear that you've now got a furry kid to liven up your life again.

Now you need to find out if Jackie can weed. My Australian Cattle Dog, Ripper, learned from watching me weed and now will attack a weed on command. She responds to a point and "Get It!" She only attacks low growing weeds that "put up a fight" (deep rooted)-that's her preference. A dog is a joy to have in the garden or just watching from the sidelines, though a JR won't be very good at just sitting on the sidelines. You will definitely be able to have a critter free garden- deer included! Give her a pat from Ripper.

Great news. I just love the greeting committee when there's a dog. They're so happy to see you that they can't even stand themselves.

I didn't know until I looked up the history of the Jack Russell that they were initially bred for hunting foxes. They would dig them out of their dens and then hold them at bay. Parson Russell, would never allow them to taste blood, just to dig them out until those on horseback arrived. That lineage is so deeply ingrained that once they catch a scent or see the fox they would give chase even if that meant a run of a few miles. Today, while sitting outside with her and talking to a neighbor his lives to travel the U.S. hunting, she delighted me when she froze into a PERFECT point and we looked across the street to find that she had spotted a squirrel that had dared to enter her domain. She stayed "on point" just frozen as her eyes followed it until it was well away. Had she not been on a leash she might have darted, so he taught me a few hunting commands that he uses in training his English Setters. I was tickled that he was so impressed by her posing. Apparently, his father had long ago used the Jack Russell for hunting squirrels. I once had a beagle who would get on a scent and hit the woods, only for us to get a call from someone a long ways away telling me he had popped up in a creek bed near their home....until one day no call came. Here I had thought Jack Russell's were just those cute little dogs you see in different types of competitions. My Jackie will never hunt, but I have already seen just how smart she is and how eager to please. She watched me plant the Fall garden today as I put all of the Fall and winter seeds in and seemed impressed with MY digging down on my hands and knees. With the ability to go over or under even five foot high fences she will be on a long lead whenever we go out. Afterwards, we had a good shower together and she climbed under the covers after a towel drying. When my wife drove up from work she ran to greet her just like Annie always did. I do believe that I will sleep well tonight! Just getting off my rear and outside is already doing wonders for me.

Yeah, Jack Russells are hunters. I was on a trail ride once, 4 riders, a Australian Cattle Dog and a Jack Russell. The ACD was always on the trail, either in front or behind the horses (herder). The JR was never on the trail (hunter), either up the hill or down the hill or darting across the trail, always hunting and rustling around in the underbrush (and spooking the horses that weren't used to a JR). Fun little dogs. Happy to hear she has settled right into the family.

I have a friend that has a Jack Russell.
The first time I saw it I ran over it.
It was dark and it came out of the yard and tried to eat my tire I was only going about 2 miles an hour.

I felt the tire run over something and stopped as the poor thing limped off into the woods.
Now the dog has forgiven me and stands in my lap.
That was years ago.

I'm so glad you found Jackie. She sounds like a wonderful dog. I was at the
shelter Saturday, as all my dogs have passed. No connection for me, but I'll
check again next month. Hopefully I will know which one is right for me.
