My large Medicare book for 2014 is close by but I would be shocked to find they would cover whirlpool appliances, I mean what's next, a sauna, a free standing deluxe whirpool, etc. When I had my two hip replacements, with the first one I was in a room where the lady in the other bed had a knee replacement, and my ortho told me that recovery from knee ones is usually longer than with hips. Of course with the second one my femur cracked so it was a much longer situation for that one. I'd been having problems with my right knee and last Fall when I saw my regular checkup with my ortho the X-ray showed calcium deposits on that knee. We discussed knee surgery, but only briefly since what's the use of a new replacement for me since I'd still have to use a walker b/c of the one quad that couldn't be reattached. How did they find out you had had knee surgery? Start with your age and well, I guess for those who know how they can use computers to access this and that. Carolyn

Thanks for all the nice wishes!
Carolynn - the "free" stuff they are offering under Medicare are things like knee braces, walkers, etc. - but once they start with their "pitch" they try to upsell extra cost whirlpools. Seems my Doctors office gives these selected companies patient names and phone numbers to help the recovery process. Just part of the eco-system I guess. Yes, knees take longer for both surgery and recovery than hips, I was told. Anyway, today I try to migrate from the cumbersome walker to a Hurrycane, as it is called. All good stuff! Raybo |

Glad it went well and that you are obviously in good spirits!
I'd say things look pretty great for being ignored for 6 weeks! We are having frigid weather here in N. Tx (And most of the country!) and my surviving tainers are hanging out in the garage trying to survive the 28 degree nights and row cover might or might not be working on the in ground plants! We'll see. Dewayne Mater |

Ray, glad it went well for you. My friends that had hip replacements only complain that they
didn't do it sooner!! But only one day in the hospital? Why you only got to sample one or two of the 445 varieties of jello that they stock for their patients. |

Actually, spending only 31 hours in the Hospital was a blessing. While all the knee / hip patients had private rooms, and the food was pretty darn good, no one got any sleep between 9:00pm and 6:00am. Constant room "lights on" for routine blood pressure / temperature checks, 4:30am blood sample, etc. resulting in NO SLEEP.
Maybe hospitals today have to err on the side of caution - but you would think hourly testing should be applied to only "high risk" patients. Anyway, I was anticipating a more difficult experience than it actually turned out to be. Raybo |

I've heard it has to do with the amount of room for the resulting swelling. The hip area has a lot more room to accommodate the swelling that comes after the surgery, where as the knee area doesn't. And my husband had the same experience with the routine vitals checks that went on all night long in the hospital. He too, was quite happy to get the boot early following his second surgery. |
