A nice surprise
I had some tomato volunteers come up in my vermicompost so I put them in small pots in the greenhouse. They have progressed nicely into some great little planst to the point of producing 3 blossoms. It will be intersting to see the results as I keep it rather cool in there. My overwintered peppers have surprised me , so I am optimistic.
We will see. jon |

When I was a small child, we had a shetland pony, and like most shetland ponies, he could outsmart us kids in a heartbeat. When he got loose, he would often go and rummage through ours and the neighbors trash cans looking for sweets.
Apparently he found some tomatoes, because my father, much to his delight, found an enormous tomato plant growing out of the manure pile. It was covered in big red tomatoes, too. That poor old pony was always in trouble for one thing or another; but, for awhile, he was my father's best buddy! |

Exactly why I avoid putting tomato seeds in my compost bin, and all tomatoes that need to be disposed of for any reason other than disease, get pitched over our wooded back hill. Sometimes I stand at the top of the hill and can pick out what look like tomato plants growing down there, but I've never seen any sign of fruit on them. If I ever did, I don't know that I could safely make it down there to retrieve them, so I guess the local wildlife would have something to snack on.

I reuse my planting mix when seeds do not start and I get some volunteers that way. I get some nice surprises because I don't what they were supposed to be. I am always for the underdog.
