I said that Neves Azorean Red would still be my first choice since it grows and produces very well foralmost everyone everywhere. And If you look at Tania's seed sources for it I think you'll agree as to its popularity. http://t.tatianastomatobase.com:88/w...b=General_Info Many of the places that offered it in previous years still list it, but Tania can only list what is sent to her and lately there are some sources that haven't been doing that. NAR came from Portugal,no doubt, to the Azores which were colonized by the Portuguese. So it remembers what it's like to have palm trees swaying in the breezes, as to heat tolerance as well. Carolyn

in my garden Cosm V was more productive and earlier than NAR. NAR wins the flavor contest, although CV is no slouch in that department.

Amazing how I thought some of these varieties were grown more often than they were. These are the results from the last dozen years. Listed by variety, year grown, total number of tomatoes and total weight. From 2002 to 2004 are results from central Iowa. 2005 and on are from southeast Nebraska. The first several Nebraska years my garden was in an area that had never been tilled and several years of amending the soil was necessary.
Cuostralee: 2002, 53 tomatoes/66 lbs., 03,11 tomatoes/7 lbs, 05, 49 tomatoes/40 lbs., 2010, 32 tomatoes/23 lbs. Stump of the World: 2003, 31 tomatoes/21 lbs., 05, 8 tomatoes/4 lbs, 07, 16 tomatoes 7 lbs., 2015, 22 tomatoes/11 lbs. Neves Azorean Red: 2004 64 tomatoes/50 lbs (a single tomato was 40 ounces), 05, 7 tomatoes/4 lbs., 06, 32 tomatoes/27 lbs., 07, 26 tomatoes/ 20 lbs., 09, 28 tomatoes/24 lbs., 2010, 7 tomatoes/6 lbs., 11, 27 tomatoes/11 lbs. Prudens Purple: 05, 4 tomatoes/1 lb., 2011, 36 tomatoes/22 lbs The other two I have not grown. You can see the variation in location and year. As for flavor, I recommend any of these, Neves being my favorite. Mine were all grown in the ground. Any of my attempts at container grown tomatoes resulted in fewer and smaller fruits.

Thanks for the detailed grow reports, I really appreciate it. Think I may narrow it down to 2 and let him pick. Their plant will have irrigation so too little rainfall shouldn't be a concern. Location will be a sunny, breezy spot on the SW side of the house, which should increase the temps near it a bit, which for our summers usually isn't a negative aside from 1 or 2 short lived heat waves, we have many summer days in the 80s and lows in the 60s.

I have not grown Big Cheef or Cuostralee. Going from memory, I would say my biggest producers are either Neves or Cosmonaut depending on the year and then Prudens and then Stump.
