Moreton Hybrid

I was just at the local farm market this morning and they have lots of Moreton Hybrid seedlings. 6 pak for $1.50

In an old gardening book I have (Growing Terrific Tomatoes 1975), they talk about this variety a lot. They say its both disease tolerant and productive. I'd give em a try for that price !

I picked up the pack and looked but I only have room for about 24 plants and everything is started so they were alluring as an experiment but not compelling.

The three earliest Harris hybrids of Moreton Hybrid, Supersonic and Jet Star ( and Star Pak as well, but that one was taken out of production) are three of my fave hybrids as regards taste.

I don't see that they are tolerant to anything that might concern me where I grow /grew tomatoes.

I suppose this is all covered on the link that Morgan gave above but I didn't take time to read it.

Several years ago my brother wanted plants of all three so I still do have part of one pack of Moreton Hybrid around somewhere and last I knew there was someone here, maybe Craig, I can't remember who, who was going to start dehybridizing it, but I haven't heard from that person.

Does anyone remember who it might be?

I dunno, but if we can do all Harris hybrids in this thread I will just say my Jet Star is the Star of my garden. 24 set and still going strong. And Brandywine OTV has 21.

Carolyn, I know that I was one of those who was going to start growing out further generations to find an OP version.

The other two people who were getting in on it are Jennifer (CDNTOMATO) and Alan (ALANSTRANGEFRUIT).

I've already received the seed and put them on my fall grow list.. thanks Craig!

Thanks Eric, for I know that I had offered my Moreton Hybrid seeds to those who were planning to dehybridize it, but no one contacted me, so I'll just squirrel them away for another day. Makes me feel good just having them around and who knows, I might even ask gardenmama to grow some for me one of these days.

Barb, as was true with Ramapo F1 when it went out of seed production I'm sure there were those who had also sandbagged Moreton Hybrid seeds as well, and that's what you're seeing locally.

Some places in NJ were selling Ramapo F1 plants long after it went out of seed production, and thankfully for me a NJ friend got some and shipped up 6 plants when indeed I really only needed ONE plant to get the F2 seeds, but my brother was delighted to grow them again.

So why did you start a thread saying you';d found some Moreton Hybrid plants then?

Like most folks I know I do grow, or did grow, a few hybrids from time to time, so don't blame me for weaning you away from any hybrids that you used to grow.

I had to wonder at that statement too.. If anything, some of the most popular varieties out there are hybrids..

..some of the best, too.

Sungold
Brandy Boy
Big Zac

Granted, I think most of us lean in favor of heirlooms and OPs, but in all reality, I think just about each and every one of us has a hybrid that we just can't, or won't, do without.
