Could my mystery PL be a Brandywine?
To recap the conversation from this thread: http://www.tomatoville.com/showthread.php?t=40415
I purchased Heart-shaped Brandywine seed online, which should be RL, and one plant came up PL. General consensus was it most likely is a stray seed. I planted out the PL plant on 4/12 in an earthbox and the RL plant on 4/18 in a raised bed. The RL is slow to flower, but the PL is huge and loaded with blooms. The fruit fruit appeared on 5/21. I've never grown any variety of Brandywine before. I assumed it was not suited for our mild Bay Area climate. This PL plant is going nuts. I am constantly pruning and it's starting to outgrow the EB net two months post-plant out. The first fruit was a standard blossom, and three weeks after its appearance it's 2.5 inches in diameter with no signs of stopping. There are five fruits developing now, none of these fruits appear heart shaped and none are in clusters. It seems to be one per truss. I did have lots of blossom drop early on. There are a few megablossoms, and two of the fruits developing appear to be fused fruit. Could this be a true Brandywine that got mixed into the seed packet? Any way I could tell? |
