Tasty Toms V Black Tula ..A question..
Hi..Growing Tasty Toms and Black Tula (Potato Leaf) inside from cuttings in my special growing area I see a real extraordinary difference between the two and I wondered if anybody could explain this to me.....
The Tasty Tom are doing great ...I have big beautiful flowers and now tomatoes have appeared ...in contrast right next door to them under the same conditions the Black Tula' flowers are hardly opening and look 1/2 dead ..IE there are no beautiful big yellow flowers like the Tasty Toms has beside them....I do have some tomatoes on one of 4 plants but of course I want these to really produce for me to make it worthwhile...They do get plenty of love and attention..and money thrown at them.. I wonder if this is typical of Black Tula and if something can be done to get them up and producing...is it something to with the pollination?? I will take some photos and post later so the difference can be seen... Regards Ron.. |

Normally, Black of Tula is a robust plant.

I grew Black from Tula for two seasons and was somewhat disappointed in it. Production was below average, to me the taste was below average for a good black tomato and it was very susceptible to gray mold. Spudakee is a potato leaf black tomato that is always on my grow list because it is very productive with great flavor and is far less susceptible to gray mold for me. It is one of my consistently productive tomatoes year in and year out.

Hi ..Thanks for the replies so I will do my best to answer them ..Dust devil..The plants were grown from cuttings inside my living room ...There is a massive thread #post583896 with pictures etc of the whole journey ..planting, lights etc all inside....
Carolyn137..Sorry... I was told that they looked like spud Tula and because I am no expert I believed this...Of course I am pleased they are the real thing...Tasty Tom 's are a Tomato developed by a gentleman in the Netherlands as I understand for the German Market (interesting story on the internet how he went about this).... Now I understand Tasty Toms are not available in the USA unless imported..here in New Zealand they appear as plants in Gardening centres at the beginning of the tomato season ...They are supplied by a Company who apparantly has the sole rights etc to grow these plants from the Netherlands ... After a disasterous growing season I went to a gardening centre I rarely visit and saw this beautiful tall ,beautifully staked plant laden with beautiful red tomatoes..Upon enquiry i was given one to try and told they were Tasty Toms....Well I realised there were still amazing tasting Tomatoes ( although anything would have been better than what I was able to grow ) ...So I then did some research and learnt that i could grow cuttings so I made enquiries about finding some cuttings and was fortunate enough to get some from a grower and some from the actual plant that so impressed me in the Garden Centre.... I found Tomatoville and started a thread Growing Laterals...put a "grow Room/chamber " in my living room and so far fingers crossed I am well on the way to success with help from some wonderful people ..especially one whom I can never thank enough.. Regarding the Black Tula ...Months ago I took some Sungold tomatoes to the local Aged concern centre and gave them to the kitchen staff and next day there was a small package with seeds and cuttings and a Black Tula Tomato for me.... Well I had the space so I grew the cuttings along with the Tasty Toms so basicly they are nearly the same age although the Black Tula are slightly younger.... You must understand its winter time over here in New Zealand so wanted to prove I could grow inside when people said I was stupid ..you cannot grow out of season?..It became a challenge but what do people do at my age...I have enjoyed every minute of it and if I can get my Tasty Toms and Black tulas 10 feet tall laden with tomatoes I will be proud of what I would have achieved.. I am getting a good crop of fruit and I will do my best to ensure that they will ripen and give me a real taste experience... I will be propagating a few other varieties for my greenhouse outside as long as I can get it reconstructed in time... b54red...Thankyou for the information ..I must look for Spudakee seeds over here ...One thing for certain is that the wisest thing I have ever done was joining Tomatoville...and I can never thank members enough for helping me with my problems... Regards Ron Ps I have found some photos that may be of interest to give an Idea of what I have done to this point of time..You will see the Freezer shell with rails in it and a panel heater on a Thermostat suspended below the rails to heat the soil...There are the growing /drums/bowls from old Washing machines and the plants themselves although the photos are a few weeks old... This is the second year that I am growing Black From Tula.
Last year it was very good in production and I compare the taste to Cherokee purple. This year it is also one of the best producing dark tomatoes , running neck and neck with Indian Stripe in number of fruits so far. Both of them are more productive than Cherokee Purple in my garden.

Devastated???
Hi Gardener..Thanks for that...I have Indian Stripe on my list for the coming season ...I grew Cherokee Purple the season before last when I thought "this is not too bad?? Growing tomatoes is pretty easy"???? Well this season past I was certainly brought down to size with a thud...Anyway I thought Cherokee Purple went off pretty quick and never grew them again...So far the best tomato for me has been Bloody Butcher ...maybe they like the climate? but in saying this nothing this year tasted any good so hopefully things can only get better although I am devastated cause I tried to tie the top of my best Tasty Tom to its stake tonight and it snapped ..I do not know what to do or if anything can be done so I got some plastic tape and taped the head and the main stem together as best I could to the stake wondering if plants heal that way..Well I guess I will soon find out...
Last season I bought seed from a commercial supplier in New Zealand ..about 6 packets were not true to label including Whipper Snapper (which grew like a indeterminate and arroused my suspicians ) and Gardeners Delight both of which I was interested in tasting .>Gardeners Delight turned out to be a Yellow oval fruit???? I really knew I had problems because by then I had various diseases in my greenhouse and when I found out seeds could be diseased I strongly suspect that the seeds were not true to label but diseased as well.....another one was Kiev (a beautifil big flavoursome fruit the catalog said) well 1/2 right as they were very sweet and tasty but the size of a small raison...By then I never knew what variety was actually true to label ...Apart from Stupice..... Ron, wonderful pictures and thanks for the update on the variety Tasty Tom.
When I think of NZ,yes,I know some others there but I think of the time my brother went there to fish for trout, and had a wonderful time.He was mentioned on the internet before I was in a book that had a list of the best bamboo rod makers, and so he still is. Not just new ones but restoration of older ones. And I used to call them poles, not rods, but he converted me. Carolyn

I am growing BFT this year for the first time. It is OK...not just that crazy about it. My production is actually pretty good. However, the fruit is a beautiful red (not dark brick red like I expected). It's taste (for me) is not near as good as my Brandywine Sudduth's or Cherokee Purple, for example. I have learned in my 3 years of pretty intense growing...give your maters at least 2 years before you make a final decision to stop growing them. Example: last year my Brandywine Cowlick's was simply awesome in every way...this year they disappoint.
