Default Tomatoes have more genes than us

In this month's Discover magazine:

Comparing gene numbers

Tomato 31,760

Human 20,000 - 25,000

This doesn't surprise me at all. Then again, I am trained as a research geneticist. Maybe it would help you feel better to know there were two whole genome duplication (WGD) events in the ancestry of tomatoes.

You think tomatoes have a lot of genes? Wheat is on a whole different order of magnitude.

Tried to find a clip for "Attack of the Killer Wheat". Was unsuccessful.

Corn has a larger genome than humans too.

There seems to be a pattern here, but I wouldn't be concerned about it

Don't even start with the ferns . . . their genomes are so large they haven't been sequenced yet!

I refuse to wear "mom jeans", so I don't have any.
