Robert,if I had the time I could try to find a thread here where folks from different countries and areas in the US were asked how they pronounce it.

Those from England and Australia, no surpise there, I remember were partial to Toe MAH toe or Tah Mah Tah but I can't remember the others right now. All to say there were many ways that many folks pronounced it,aha,I remember it was said that rich ladies in X also used the British pronunciation, and nope no ties to Britain ever.

Yes they do.

Out of 84 plants, I planted a few that are red. Most are Pink, Black, Yellow, Orange, Blue, Green, Bi-Color...

It is tomate in Spanish and sorry but most US citizens as well as English mispronounce it.

As for the color.. red is only acceptable if there are no other options ripened.. I try to avoid reds, but will grow a few for my Mom, who is old-fashioned..

It is just a name. Even biblical names spelled and pronounced DIFFERENTLY in different cultures.
Bu I thinK the original name that the Spanish gave to it was "To mah teh", as Worth explained.
I think Germans pronounce it the same way like in HAHMS GELBE TOPFTOMATE

I normally say tomado, and if plural it has a z sound at the end.
I will not go out of my way to pronoune it correctly for someone not from where I come from.
The same goes for lever.
I say it the way the English say it as in Leever.
I had to work around someone that was constantly correcting the way folks from the south said things.
He would always do it in front of a crowd so as to make you feel like an idiot.
This is the same person that said that chili was the Spanish word for beans.
One day I told him to just go $%^# off.
