Figured I'd post a quick update -

My one surviving Terhune plant is in the garden and doing just fine. Has two flower trusses, but none have bloomed yet.

All six Casino plants survived. Two are in the garden, two were adopted by a friend, and two, sadly, went into the compost heap on our back hill. The two in my garden are doing well so far.

Finally reporting in - school's out, garden's almost planted, it's a rainy day, so I have time. Here's my germination results:

Neves Azorian Red planted: 9 germinated: 1 Percent: 11
Vince P1 planted: 12 germinated: 3 Percent: 25
Hoy planted: 9 germinated: 2 Percent: 22
Kazachka (Courtney) planted: 9 germinated: 6 Percent: 67
Green Zebra Cherry planted: 7 germinated: 2 Percent: 29

Not sure why so many had such low germination - I had good germination on many others, planted the same day, in the same way. A couple varieties got hit hard by a frustrating case of gray mold in the greenhouse, and I completely lost the Kazachkas. But the others are settling into outside garden life just fine, so far.

Picked and ate my first Cuore del Drago today. Very meaty, with a slightly smoky taste. Not the best for eating fresh, but it seems like it would make a lovely sauce. Lots of BER but it seems to be affecting just the tips so I am able to let them ripen fully.

Picked a couple pink currants and am letting them finish ripening inside, but they definitely appear to be pink, and very tiny!

Aha, I've been looking for you, that is in my data book, with the list of folks who requested growing out the pink currant.

Lurley has confirmed that it's a pink currant and so has Nancy Ruhl, to whom Ted also sent seeds.

I need to contact ALL of you who grew it out to let you know that I offered to Nancy to e-mail Ted since I have his EM addy, and add her name to the e-mail to see what Ted himself wants to name it.

So pretty please no sharing of seeds or offering them until we know what Ted wants to call it.

And remember, all you folks who grew it out promised to send me back seeds. Right?

I grew the Cuore del Drago myself and never tasted anything smoky at all but as I said in my seed offer I had expected a heart but confirmed that what we got was what is was supposed to be.

I'm totally out of seeds for the dragon, so when I put up the next thread on perfomance I was going to ask for a few seeds back from that one.

And I must find that note book b'c there were just a few folks growing out Joe'
s Pink Oxheart b'c I had so few seeds and the person who was doing the seed production for thosefewseeds said it was one of THE best tasting hearts he's ever grown, and he lists maybe 700 varieties in the SSE Yearbooks each year.

I will definitely send you seeds of both varieties once I have more fruits ripening! I was going to save some from the first fruits but my appetite got the best of me.

So you have both the pink currant and Joe's pink Oxheart as well?

Clearly I haven't had time to look for that certain data book yet where I copied down the user names.

Yes and no. I'm growing a pink currant and Cuore del Drago.

I also have a plant each of Lucinda and Angora Orange but so far no ripe tomatoes, in case you want seeds for those as well.

Aha, so it was the pink currant and the dragon.

Yes, for sure some pink currant seeds and yes, some dragon seeds if you have a few extra since I have no more dragon seeds and I like to have some on hand.

I'm OK with Lucinda and Angora Orange, but quite honestly right now I haven't the faintest idea of what I might be offering in my next seed offer, but I do know it's going to be done differently since last year was a huge mess as far as I was concerned.

I'm excited to hear they are pink currants, mine are not ripe here yet, fingers crossed as lots of blight about this year.

I've had it at the back of my mind for a while that something was not right with my Lucinda, when I finally checked description again it seems I have something else growing, sadly foliage isn't right nor fruit shape although they are cherry size.

Here's what the foliage and fruits look like and I'd noted it was a green when ripe in my seed offer. And I think I mentioned that the foliage was like Silvery Fir Tree since it's one of the parents.

Were you growing anything else that might look like the picture you just showed?

All I can say is that I sent some of the original seeds from Fred to Craig L who raised my plant for me and I got what the picture above showed and Craig is growing it this year for himself and in his recent thread here he noted the foliage, etc.

Other seeds were sent to the person who did the seed production and it's those seeds I distributed. And I assumed they were correct for the variety.

So we shall see when I do put up that final thread about performance of the varieties from my seed offer in a month or so, so stay tuned.

I thought I'd been so careful with the seeds/plants you sent, sown in the same batch together and grown on in the same group. I've a plant of "Lucinda", Blush and Vince P1 in the greenhouse, duplicates along with Pink currants are together in the poly-tunnel in case they made too big a plant for the green house. I have a picture of each of the other varieties as young plants, I think someone posted a picture of Lucinda so I didn't bother. But as I said it's been a niggle for a while, the information was there I just didn't get it together.

I've a list of the cherries I sowed this year, which hopefully will give a match. I think once I get a ripe fruit it should narrow it down. I keep the greenhouse for growing mostly cherries, so far nothing is an obvious match. I did have a few too many plants and the extras were planted in the poly-tunnel, so I'll do a double check there too.

I posted this information in another thread about pointy tomatoes that aren't supposed to be pointy, but since it's about seeds I received through your seed offer, I figured I should put it here as well.

I have two Casino plants that went in the ground at the end of May snd started setting fruit weeks ago. The first fruit were the classic plum shape. Later ones to set are plums with points on the end. And now suddenly I'm seeing a few elongated fruit. The picture below was taken today and shows three fruit shapes all on the same truss.

In your original offer you said the seeds were contributed by Heritage and that they were plums. I'm guessing there was some crossing!

As long as you saw the correct plum shapes originally my suggestion is that other fruit shapes and pointy ends are the result of environmental conditions, aka weather b'c it can happen and does happen more than might be expected. I could have the same out there in the backyard right now but since I can't get out there to look b'c of my walker, I'll just have to wait until Freda has time to assess my plants for me.

Yes, the seeds for Casino were donated to me by Steve, who has an excellent reputation for true seeds.

And when I put up the performance thread in another month or so, with all the weird weather so many of us are having, I wouldn't be surprised to see that others were getting pointy bottoms and altered shapes, and it doesn't ASAP suggest to me that there's been crossed seeds sent out by me or anyone else, and I mean any variety, not just Casino.

Thre already is a thread here about the pointy blossom ends and I think that's the thread you may be referring to.

Hi Carolyn,
Yes, it was the thread on pointy tomatoes that I was referring to. Others thought it might be a factor of weather, and now you've confirmed that it's quite likely the cause. It just had me thinking a cross might be possible with Casino because the other 13 (I think) varieties and all the commercially available dwarfs I'm growing are all showing the correct shape as of right now.

Now that the heat wave has ended and nights will be cooler, it'll be interesting to see what happens with shapes going forward!
