If you want to grow a reliable hybrid, everyone is right about Big Beef and the seedlings should be easy to find in most communities. Sometimes we forget about the qualities of some of the old, standard, op varieties. I discovered "Mortgage Lifter" and grew it for the first time last year. For most people, it is a hohum boring variety. For me, it had all the desired qualities you listed and it will probably be in my garden every year. I will keep trying all the latest new varieties like everyone else, but a space will always be reserved for some of the old varieties like Mortgage Lifter. Ted |
