I know the search function here can sometimes be a pain, but last year there was a thread that asked for non-sweet varieties for someone from India as they don't like sweet varieties. If you can find that thread, maybe you will get some more suggestions.

I grew Virginia Sweets last year and found them to be more rich and full flavored, despite the name. Not what I would consider tart, but definitely not what I'd consider sweet. But as many have said, everyone "tastes" things differently. This year I'm trying Aunt Gertie's Gold.

Interesting...well looks like tomatoes do vary in flavor based on region/taste perceptions, etc...I've grown Virginia Sweets twice in the past...they came out somewhat sweet in the raised bed which has some shade in the afternoon, but really sweet in my containers which get sun all day. Aunt Gertie's Gold...for me...when the tomato is just right...was a really full sweet fruity taste (one of my favorites), so I don't think it would fall under the non-sweet category. But it's definitely a good tomato. I don't think you'll be dissappointed growing it, if anything, it just takes a long time to grow.

I have a new seed this year that is being advertised as strong acid flavor and large.

Claude Brown's Yellow Giant

Here's a monster. Claude Brown grew and improved this tomato for decades in Pike county, Ky. Not only huge, but productive too. It has an acidic flavor like a red tomato.

Maybe some one here who has experience with this variety and attest to it's acid flavor? I bought mine from Blue Ribbon Tomatoes on Ebay.

Carol, thank's for the links. Along with specific varieties, including blacks and striped tomatoes should fill the request.

Alfredo, I'm not sure if you have the real Aunt Gertie's Gold. It is a very tart tomato in my garden, with just a hint of a sweet aftertaste. The fruit shape is usually very rough and it's also usually covered in stitching.

(think a baseball run over by a car and then peed on by a dog)

(and the above would be looks, not taste)

Djena Lee's Golden Girl is not necessarily large (unless you are
DeerPark, apparently), more baseball sized, but the flavor has
a definite bite to it. True "old time flavor".

Lol wow that's quite a description for Aunt Gertie's Gold ...it's very possible the Aunt Gertie's Gold just grows different in each of our gardens...my seed is from Tomato Growers Supply, and I've used them for YEARS for my tomato seeds(as I haven't exchanged seeds with anyone), so I'm pretty sure its a legit Aunt Gertie's Gold. Based on what you wrote, my crop doesn't have as much stitching as yours, maybe a couple here and there, but I wouldn't say its on most of them. They do though, as you remarked, sometimes grow a bit misshapen when they get really large. I'm surprised you said they just have a "hint of a sweet aftertaste" actually, they weren't like that for me. Everyone has their opinion though.

Hey...as long as some of the varieties some of the fellow tomato villains have suggested have helped with what you're looking for, that's all that really matters for this thread anyway. ~Alfredo
