Thank you, Craig. I'll keep my eyes open for them. Do you want any seed saved from any of our growouts sent back?

Eric, Jennifer and Alan - please so save seeds from whatever you grow and feel free to share a small sample with me (obviously, my goal is to have so many vials of tomato seed that I can compete with my wife's fabric collection! We will need to reinforce the floors of our upstairs rooms!)

Craig, as the daughter of an award-winning quilter, do I ever hear you.
Okay, Carolyn. What's the current, if any, dehybridization status of Jetstar and Supersonic? Jennifer, closing the closet door to her knitting supplies |

Okay, Carolyn. What's the current, if any, dehybridization status of Jetstar and Supersonic?
**** None that I know of and if you look at the first post in this thread by Mischka he said that Mark Willetts said that those two are fine and two of their top sellers and they don't expewct to see them disappear, or words to that effect. But how can anyone really predict the future? I do have one pack each of Supersonic and Jet Star F1's as well as the Moreton Hybrid, so if anyone is interested, fine. But I do think it's best to concentrate on one variety at a time or the multiple selections for more than one might get a bit hard to handle. On the other hand as my and Craig's F1 seed ages perhaps it might be worthwhile to grow out an F1 plant of Jet Star and Supersonic just to get the F2 seed, which would extend the seed life of dehybridizing those varieties. I also would very much appreciate getting back some MH OP when one of you has it stabilized, in the same spirit that I offered my Ramapo seeds to everyone. I wish I could help with growouts, but I just can't these days and you folks know it. I do think that all three of these Harris varieties are just two parent hybrids in which case you may be as lucky as I was with dehybridizing Ramapo. I could clearly see the one off parent in the F2 but it was pretty much gone by the F3 growout, so I'm told.

There are plenty of Jet Star F2 and Supersonic F2 seed available, from David (dwlcrl).

And since the F1 hybrid seed for both is readily available that shouldn't be a problem. Thanks

Well, now that you mention it, I have Supersonic F1, saved seed (so have F2), and grew out two (so have 2 of the F3).
I've not done anything more with them, but again, if you have room....

As much as Supersonic and Jet Star do sound like nice hybrids, at this point, I'm with Carolyn - One hybrid/dehybridization project at a time, or I'm in trouble At some later date, perhaps, though. ...and I will definitely share seed on these as the project progresses, and Carolyn, you'll be the first one I send the OP seeds to. - Eric

Moreton Hybrid is starting to sound like Lazarus to me b'c this is the second time it's come back from the dead if you recall.
Shortly after Moran bought out Harris to from Harris-Moran they said the one parent of Moreton was lost and it was out of production for many years. Then they found the parent and it appeared again. I don't know why it was dropped this last time but I'm delighted to see it back again. For I think that that the three earliest Harris Hybrids of Moreton Hybrid, Supersonic and Jet Star are three of the best tasting hybrids around, bar none, along with blemish free fruits and great production. There was another one that I loved called Starpack and it went out of production and never came back. Thru some contacts at Harris, which in the meantime had split from Moran and was again independent, I made contact with the tomato hybridiers, well actually the squash hybridizers, who stayed at Moran, and I almost had them convinced to send me the two parents of Starpack, but alas, it never came to be. Lately I know several folks who are or want to try and dehybridize Supersonic and Jet Star. I still have partial packs of them plus Moreton Hybrid somewhere out in the backroom and that's where they're staying for now.

I know this was mentioned in another thread a while back, but I wanted to resurrect this thread to let folks know that Harris Seed is again offering their classic Moreton Hybrid F1 variety once again.
Moreton Hybrid does consistently well here. I recommend it to anyone growing tomatoes here in the northeast, even if just as a backup for your tasty heirloom types. http://www.harrisseeds.com/Storefron...hybrid-f1.aspx

Maybe they are more popular than they thought
I ordered them on 11/5, they were placed on back order and I got them yesterday ( 12/29 - shipped on 12/23). Origin = Costa Rica They may be stocked up now but wanted to pass along. |

I'm very happy with any and all of the earliest F1's bred by Harris which includes Moreton Hybrid, Supersonic and Jet Star, which I think have some of the best tastes to be found with red hybrids,
