I was very impressed with Black From Tula last year. And Cherokee purple is a classic.
I love the taste and texture of dark tomatoes.

Gardeneer
Well, you did put a ? after purple/black,so I will reply.

There are those so called blacks that have a clear epidermis, notyellow,so I call them pink blacks and they aren't black or purple. Those with a yellow epi Icall red/blacks and they are much darker in color, like Carbon or Black Krim.

Cherokee Purple, clear ep
Black from Tula,clear epi
Black Sea Man **, grew it several decades ago, don't remember.
Indian Stripe **clear epi
Daniel Burson **, don't let Travis (Bill Jeffers) see that you called it a purple black.

If anyone wants to grow a variety that existed before the antho fad , some might call them having a real purple incertainareas, please consider the following all of which I've grown and I won't comment on taste,b'c it's only in the mouth of the person growing them that taste matters.

Purple Smudge
Orange Fleshed Purple Smudge
Noir des Cosebeauf
Purple Calabash

....... to name a few,there aren't many

Pruden's Purple did well for me last year and the taste was superb, right up there with Rose.

There's someone in Kingston who starts and sells lots of seedlings who recommends Paul Robeson as early and tasty. I was tempted, but think I will stick with Indian Stripe RL which I love.

Default Tad

Tad is a cross between Tigerella and Old German.

Since Carolyn likes to bring up the subject of Tad when the mood takes her, I thought people would be interested to know.....

Sorry for hijacking Sharron's thread.

Correct, and has been posted before but as I said it was a 3 way cross, and I don't know if Tad back crossed something, right now it doesn't matter to me at all.

Oh how I wish I still had the sheets that Tad sent to me with the chromosomes marked as to location.

The mood only is a concern to me when I see some saying they had seeds for Tad,which is not correct, since only Craig L and myself do,as I've also posted.

There is an undocumented speculation that some heart shaped pink was involved in that mythological :::smile::: menage a trois. Madamoiselle Anna Somebody Oranother.

Sounds sexy, a menage a trois! So I succumbed to my tomato disease and ordered Paul Robeson seeds. One description said it is suited for cooler climates, so hopefully, it will do well in Montreal.
Carolyn, without giving your opinion on taste, I would say based on names only, I would not be tempted to grow those tomatoes that you mentioned.
Purple Smudge
Orange Fleshed Purple Smudge
Noir des Cosebeauf
Purple Calabash

Linda, no problem hi-jacking my thread, I did it also!
Gardeneer, no I did not send you seeds, only recommendations.
Karen, waiting for your crosses to stabilize!

I know Cherokee Purple is a highly touted tomato and I have grown both it and Black Krim, and Black Russian. CP and BK were so so, and I know that you can't base anything on one season, but IS just has been amazing for me. Black Russian was one of the worst tomatoes I have ever tasted. I couldn't even like it oven roasted or in a sauce. Maybe just me.
So now my list looks like:
Owen's Purple
Daniel Burson
ISPL, ISRL
Paul Robeson
Black from Tula
Carbon Copy

Just to say I'm still trying to narrow down all the other varieties, as well but of course that's for another thread, lol

Who knows? Last year all my early varieties were late...
The earliest dark tomatoes for me are usually IS, ISPL, and surprisingly JD's Special C Tex. I also find Pruden's Purple to be one of the earliest but I consider it a pink. They are also among the most productive tomatoes I grow. For late cool weather tomatoes which might do well in your climate I have really good luck with Carbon, Berkely Tie Dye Pink, and Spudakee. They all seem to ripen well once the temps get too low for most others to ripen. This is just anecdotal info from my own observations but I have been growing fall tomatoes for years and it can be really frustrating to have plants loaded with nice big green tomatoes that just won't ripen in the cooler temps of fall.

I don't think from the original cross, but as selections were made by several from seeds of the original cross that Craig sent to others, hint, possible other accidental crosses that led to some heart shaped ones,no doubt about it in my mind,so does this mean we really agree with each other or are you implying something different?)

I was just having a little fun. Maybe the heart shape alluded to is Anna Russian? Does that ring a bell? I could look for the thread in wayback, but serously, I am worn out googling on this little cell phone and trying to keep up with posting clarifications on another thread here. Not worth the time really.

Anyway, as I've posted elsewhere about Tad x Brandywine, I started with allegedly F2 seeds sourced from very close to LeHoullier, and I got elongated globes on one of my plants, basically blunt hearts.

I'm not saying the "F2" inscribed on the pack indicated (old German x tigerella) x Anna Russian (f2) , or just old German x tigerella (f2).

You can do several things.

An offer for Daniel Burson is currrently in I think the wanted or tradeseed subforum, assuming you are a registered member here and is still open,or you can go to the Wanted Forum yourself and see if anyone has seeds,or you can wait until my seed offer is up and I'll be offering it with seeds from Travis (Bill) who developed the variety.

Public Service Announcement for everyone.

When looking for seeds it's always best not to ask in a thread where only the folks in the thread see it,or by PMing someone directly since if they had seeds to share they would make their own seed offers. And I mention this since there have some problems lately in how some are trying to get seeds from others, and then the persons contacted are in a quandry and often I get a PM complaining about it.

Hope the above helps,

Carolyn
