Last night was the first night they spent outside, and that was in a screened-in canopy. It got down to high 50's last night. I guess I am babying them.

Alas I do not have a greenhouse or any other type of structure like that.

It will be 49 Sunday morning and 45 Monday morning, so I will probably bring my plants in both Saturday and Sunday night.

I'm in the DFW area and am a couple weeks behind those of you in Houston. Started seeds Jan 15th and today they look like this:






I started the following mostly thru Suze's recommendation:

Aker's West Virginia
Aunt Ginny's Purple
Black Cherry
Carbon
Cherokee Purple
Kimberly
Paul Robeson

I started about 6 of each variety since this is only the second time I've ever started from seed. Since I'm confined to self-watering containers I can only plant 1 of each variety. (It looks like a move to 1 acre is in my future) I plan on forcing the extras on several co-workers who don't know anything other than hybrids exist.

They've been outside some for the last 4 days...all day today since it's overcast and 70.

I plan on planting them in their containers sometime the first week of March and can put them in the garage at night if needed.

They seem to be doing really well. It's all due to all of the valuable information I've gotten on this site about starting-mix, shop-lights, temperature, fans, fish emulsion, water....

I've been reading this site daily since last May. I think I joined 5 days before Feldon. Feldon, our respective number of postings doesn't reflect it, but I think I may have spent almost as much time as you on this board. I check for new posts 3 or 4 times a day. I'm just glad spring is rolling around, since the board activity seems to be picking up a little.

Beautiful seedlings...I mark mine the same way, as toddlers love to pull the popsicle sticks out. I only have very young pepper seedlings and your pictures make me long to plant tomato seed.
They should do well.

Feldon: I don't know where in the DFW area you happen to be, or what your travel arrangements are, but if you're anywhere in the vicinity of Grapevine you're more than welcome to get some of my plants. I know you would appreciate them and take care of them better than some of the people I plan on giving them to.

As much as I'd like to check it out, it doesn't look like SETTfest is going to work for me this year. My wife is due with our 5th right about the middle of June. I don't think she would understand if I told her I was driving to South Texas to eat tomatoes and meet all of my internet tomato friends while she stayed home and gave birth.

I can't stand anything below 65 degrees m'self...
I can only imagine how the l'il seedlings feel.

Forecasted high was 84, so almost 10 degrees higher than predicted. The inferno is coming...........

Thanks for the great offer! Alas I'm already back in Houston. I should have taken you up on Black Cherry and a spare Cherokee Purple. Anyway, I am sure I will have plenty of tomatoes as I am growing at least 23 varieties now.

Hopefully you can break away for a day and join us. Get the baby hooked on tomatoes right from the start.

For those who don't know, there were dust/sand storms in Dallas today from about 2pm on. The sky turned brown and the sun was a shocking blue-white color. The light on the cars looked so bizarre, like a halogen blue light shining down. And the winds -- 20-40mph with gusts of 50mph. That dust didn't really clear out until we were about 100 mi south of Dallas.

Got home to see the seedlings are alright. The temperatures are SO perfect (46+ at night, 60-75 during the day), there is no reason I cannot plant now except my plants are not completely hardened off.

While you have the nice temps and talk about planting tomatoes, we are getting another foot of snow. Nice!
