Finally getting some nice fruit...

Tons of small fruited varieties that did not seem affected by the
early bad weather. Also growing many dwarf project and micros
for the first time this year in grow bags.

GreenBee and AtomicGrape were stuffed with herbed goat cheese
and baked on the far end of the grill. Delicious. Many used in a
cornmeal crust Galette, Zucchini flower Frittata, Fusilli Adult
Mac-n-Cheese. (a bit like a lasagna). Three different Salsas,
Bbq sauce for the brisket, a Pico, and a tomato salad.
(way too much food but necessary not knowing how many guests)

Big surprises for the small fruited tasting. A Dwarf Emmy F2,
(A mystery cross - DwarfEmeraldGiant X either SunGold or
MexicoMidget), WON by a landslide. No real second or third place
as no-one agreed. All great, and the tiny red RemyRouge was
loved by a few but I don't like it at all. (like shot of tomato pasted
from a tube). Would be great on a pizza or tucked in a focaccia
before baking. Will grow again just for that rich flavor.

Follett's chocolate cherries loved. Many more varieties were not
ripe. The big looser was the Mystery Oblate Pear volunteer that
showed up in a deck pot. Lots of fruit but just not full flavored or
unusual. But much better that a store bought winter cherry.
Almost like a cross of YellowPear and RedPear, (who cares, lol)

The winner, in the bottom left pic, the pale pink cherry fourth from
the left below the red cherry, has the flavor of watermelon,
cantaloupe and pink grapefruit. Brix is 11.5
I don't usually like a sweet tomato but in a cherry with lemony
grapefruit finish it is outstanding.
(I picked those cherries this morning)...lots more fruit on the way
for seed saving. Picked first TennSuited. Impatient for the rest of
the Dwarf Metallica and nice looking KangarooPawBrown.
(48 dwarf and micros on the deck in pots. I would have a crap
year without them).
Bottom right pic is the Mystery Oblate Pear.
Dotson'sLebanesHeart, two fruits now, are orange, not red.
Should be tasting tomorrow or may wait yet another day to see
if it colors up red...could be environmental.

The menu. Worked out well but had many last minute changes.
Prepped lots of sides at home having no real formal kitchen at
the farm. Potato salad, slaws, mustards, bbq sauce, sous vide the
pork and brisket....salsas, pico.

Straight into mid-day lunch/early dinner. I had the wood fired
grill/smoker going for the brisket anyway so dogs and brisket
on split NewEngland buns.
Smoked Shrimp/scallops barely made it off the grill...should have
put halved GreenBees on top since they were on cedar planks and
not turned....next year.
(they were supposed to be lobster rolls but my local market who
e-mailed me a thousand times about their lobster sale were out
when I got there)
Goat cheese/herbed stuffed tomatoes, GreenBee, Brad'sAtomic
Grape, etc along with stuffed zucchini flowers, no pic as they
were gone in seconds...need to make more of those next
year. Need more than 6 zucchini plants.

Bacon, lettuce and 'Orange Heart' sammies tonight.

oven...

only link with my sister in Miami via text...

yes, those seeds are from you but I will post what I think \happened but they are your seeds....I am so strict and almost\zen in seed production....

Dwarf searching needs everyones help if you have a very small
container do help out!

I barely understand my own words above.
I'm not sure if anyone else is growing DwarfMetallica. It is a big
project and relies on volunteers.
Most of my Dwarfs are hunts and grow-outs. Full of surprises.
Released varieties I'm growing...dKangarooPawBrown and
dTennesseeSuited. A few others in the farm garden upstate.

That is a frittata in the 3rd and 4th pic.
1 and 2, cornmeal crust galette, (hatch chili cheddar under
the crust's edge)

Darin, I don't mind a few surprises but don't care much for
mysteries. I avoid self-inflicted ones like planting a start with a
lost label unless I know it is from my stable of favorites. Easily
identified once fruiting.
The DOT mystery, two plants fruiting the same side-by-side. Near
sure it is DonaF1 hybrid. If it fruited a pink heart I would be sure
a Dotson's.

My main bed has my stable and 3-5 of each, all true from my own
saved seeds.

The back beds have all new-to-me varieties. Sure labeling seed
mix-ups happen, lost tags, wrong tags, but odds are high on a
seed jump in a tray to hit another heart shape cell.

Fortunately my other mystery volunteer oblate pear is not such
a great one. Taste is a solid 5. It improved a bit but not much.

I did a good search through my seed maps for something orange
heart-like. One not on this map is SweetOzarkOrange started a
few weeks later but that is a beefsteak.
We even discussed not posting, lol, many a dinner conversation.

I have a few more of your seeds, and saving the orange, to grow
out side by side for similar plant/leaf/fruit shape comparison.

Maybe it remains a mystery but no exclamation marks about it.
I have many pink oxhearts in my favorites so an orange is not
such a bad thing being such a great one in taste.

I made a copy of this map and crossed off the obvious, then the
half dozen remaining I went through Tatiana and pics here.
Plan9 did not look right either. Many in your pile of harvest have
blunt, more pointed, and oblate hearts. Just not many pics of a
very tell-tale slice. Of the blunt heart and the oblate. Seeing the
seed cavity slice can help.

(I did not post this on your grow-out post as it is not pink and
probably not a 'not')

Oakley- thanks! It is most definitely a mystery. Next year, I would definitely try a few more seeds from the pack I sent you and see if it grows true. In my first growout of Dutch's seeds, I planted 16 seeds and 6 germinated. One of them was a PL plant! So I had my own mystery. I tried growing it out, but it got either spider mites or TSWV and I lost it. It was sown in a tray with 3 PL Terhunes next to it, so I'll bet I had a seed hop. Shtuff happens!
