Carolyn
I agree with you but continue to call it SRH because that was what was listed on the package of seeds I got from Tomatofest 2 years ago. There was,as you may recall,a discussion on GW concerning wispy foliage on one of the two. Nothing wispy with the ones I grew and saved seeds from. I'd like to call it Rostova as well but I purchased this Tomato under the SRH name and didn't want to deceive anyone.

How jealous am I? I cannot start my seeds until late March but I will also grow a lot of transplants from the local market.

Is anyone interested in Bulgarian varieties? I have access to saved seed as well as packeted seed - not sure how I should phrase that-pkts are commercial saved are from locals that I know.

I noticed Drusba(sp) and in another thread 'Bulgarian Pink' I have not found these in Bulgaria.

Sunset Red Horizon = Rostova....
It was Rostova first. I have never understood why anyone would take it upon themselves to just up and change the name of a known variety of tomato.

Hey Folks,

Don't shoot the freakin messenger. I am holding a package of seeds I paid TomatoFest $3.95 for that is labeled "Sunset's Red Horizon". If you've got a beef with the history of the name (Rostova) take it up with Gary Ibsen who is making a pretty penny off this seed variety - not me!

Can someone tell me how he changed the name and why??

I ask because it has been mentioned before here that he has done this in the past.

Phreddy, I am very interested in Bulgarian varieties b/c there's not a Bulgarian OP variety that I've tried yet that I don't love.

Druzba is spelled many ways and it's one I like very much as well as Bulgarian Triumph, a cluster type that's been around for a long time.

I got seeds from someone who had a patient from Bulgaria and those varieties were named by me Kroska Pink Bulgarian and Milka's Red Bulgarian.

I had a friend whose son spent a year in Bulgaria and he returned with eight commercial packs. Even though seven of the varieties were labelled as hybrids, one was not, and that became what I cleverly called Bulgarian # 7.

So anything you have in the OP, preferably heirloom line, I'd be very interested in trying and would have some varieties you might be interested in that I could then send you.

Please PM me if you want to go further.

Ray and Greg, I didn't mean to upset anyone but I really do not like names being changed, and this particular one has been a rough one for lots of folks.

And yes, it has been taken up with Gary, whom I know, but not by me, for I say what is, is. Gary likes to name varieties for different persons as you know. He asked me if I had a variety that I hadn't distributed so he could name it for Julia Child. it turns out I did have such a variety which eventuially became Neves Azorean Red. But he wanted exclusive use of it and my position has always been that no OP heirloom variety belongs to any one person. I allowed the folks at GW to help name it and then sent seeds to the 22 folks who posted in that thread. I also listed it in the SSE Yearbook for general availability and I also sent seeds for trial to those seed companies that I trust and have had a long association with.

In a nutshell, Gary entered into some kind of association with the folks at Seedfest. One of the owners is from the former Russia and they offered many varieties from that area. One of them was Rostova. Gary liked it and wanted to rename it SRH for the Sunset magazine that I guess has some business association with his Tomatofest, I don't know the particulars.

When Gary first offered SRH he used the same description that one would find at Seedfest for Rostova which is why many folks recognized that and knew that SRH was Rostova.

I don't know the details of the arrangement between Seedfest and Gary and don't want to, but the former have posted that they are not pleased with what happened. And yes, we have had several folks say that recently they're getting wispy leaved heart shaped fruit. That thread is here at Tville and also that has been mentioned elsewhere where I post.

The folks at Seedfest are aware of this somewhat different Rostova and have posted, or did post at their site, that they were trying to get back from their seed stock the original Rostova that was not heart shaped and did not have wispy leaves.

That's about as much as I know and I personally have never asked Gary what the deal was and why the Seedfest folks were so upset. And I won't be asking. What's done is done and one can't go backwards.

Some folks know that SRH is really Rostova but many more do not know that. it's easy to say the heck with the name, if it's a good variety it makes no difference what the name is. And folks who know the situation have the choice to call it whatever they want to; either SRH or Rostova.

my own personal position and that of quite a few others is that it should be known that the original name is Rostova and that's how I and many others prefer to refer to it.

And if you looked at the link Ami provided you'll see two things of interest.

First, Seedfest goes by several names and Anioleka is one of them and I forgot to say that..

Second, he says there that he agreed to Gary renaming it, but that post was done in 2003 and something happened after that to have Kelly and him post at Seedfest what they did about the renaming, etc.

None of us will ever be privy to what the conditions were re renaming, at that time.

I haven't been to the Seedfest/Anioleka website recently and don't intend to. but if someone does go there, and I think they're still around, you can see if the still have a blurb about Rostova.

I say still around b'c they moved from OR to Scotland, stayed there a few years, still offering seeds, and have only been back in OR for a couple of years now.

Seedfest seems to do business under at LEAST 7 different names and have nearly a dozen websites. I have a problem with that.

Reading these descriptions of Rostova, I may have to become a FAD gardener!! I am on the lookout for a decent red.

Ooops. I thought I'd posted a list.

Ok, I'll post it here.

I am uniquely lucky that Suze is growing 160-180 tomato plants so chances are, if there is an interesting new FAD variety, she'll be growing it. So I can focus on reliable favorites.

* Arkansas Traveler x 2
* Black Cherry
* Brandywine (FlipTX) x 2
* Cherokee Purple x 2
* Druzba
* Gregori's Altai x 2
* Indian Stripe
* JD's Special C-Tex x 2
* Jet Star
* Kalman's Hungarian Pink
* Monomakh's Hat
* Neves Azorean Red
* Paul Robeson
* Summer Cider
* Sungold
* Turk's Mut

and perhaps that unknown German heirloom picked up at Tomatopalooza. And maybe Tipsy F2 of the dwarf project. If I had all the space in the world, I'd grow 12 of them to really contribute to the project.

So Morgan, I ask if you've grown the following more than decent large reds:

Red Penna
Chapman ( true one)
Wes
Milka's Red Bulgarian
Russian Bogatyr
Andrew Rahart's Jumbop Red ( not jumbo)
Russian #117
St. Lucie
Erica d' Australie
Aker's West Virginia
Coustralee
Zogola

.... for starters, and BTW, you might jusut want to try Rostova.

Or are you becoming fad oriented?

I grew Red Penna and got ONE tomato off of it. It was the best red tomato I've ever eaten, but alas. Tried it at Suze's and it didn't measure up.

I grew Wes and made the mistake of trying to eat several when I thought they were ripe. When I tried one at Suze's (which felt to my hands to be almost rotting), I found it to be excellent.

I tried Cuostralee at Tomatopalooza, but I do not remember what I thought of it. I can't make up my mind if I want to grow it. I tried Aker's West Virginia at Suze's and it was decent, but not great for me. Stump of the World at Tomatopalooza was AMAZING, as was Goose Creek (sorry!). I saved seeds of that unknown German heirloom and will be giving them a try.

I sowed your seeds of Zogola but they were a non-starter. Perhaps user error on my part.

Rob (tylenol, anyone heard from him lately? ) mailed me a ripe Chapman as well as Azoychka, New Big Dwarf and a few others. Alas the Chapman had given up the ghost before it got to me. I saved a bunch of seeds though so I can certainly grow it if I want.

I tried Russian Bogatyr at Suze's and was not impressed.

The rest, I have not tried. It seems to take a great deal of self discipline for me at tomato tastings to actually go out of my way to taste specific varieties and take note of them. I guess because I was not born a social person so that takes a good bit of concentration on its own.

Goose Creek was my winner for 2007.

Not tried SOW but will now based on your experience.
