SSE on-line yearbook

If so it's right about on schedule in terms of going to printing, which takes 2-3 weeks, usually, if everythingg oes right, which in the past has not always been the case. So we could expect the YEarbook to be mailed out in late January, early February and then it takes a few weeks before everytone gets their copy. It could be sonner than that, only time will tell.

As to the online I still don't think the 2010 Request download form as well as the individual members blurbs are there which has their contact information and how they want folks to request seeds, and what their cut off dates are, if any, and what prices they might be asking for if they are different from the SSE suggested prices, and any other personal comments they made in that contact information.



If either of the two features are now there, please share that here.

I've been seeing that message since late November. No clue why that is...

I tinkered with the search function a few times this weekend. It was a bit disappointing and buggy. I think I will love the 'find orphan varieties' part though.

I loved updating my listings online, but I will definitely be saving my actual browsing for the printed edition.

What a total and complete disaster!!!!

I think I'll put my membership renewal on hold indefinitely!

Obviously not ready for prime time!!!

I think they fired the wrong people, or not enough people at SSE!

Too bad!!!

I can understand your anger as you just exhibited, but if it were me I certainly wouldn't hold off my membership renewal just b'c of problems with the online version, but that's your choice.

Since everyone this will also get the paper Yearbook that should be sufficient for everyone.

The online version was subcontracted out and it was not SSE that constructed it but they provided the variety data, obviously. However there turned out to be many glitches as you know and now it is up to SSE to try and solve all those problems and it isn't easy.

As my Swedish Grandmother used to say:

Patience is a virtue
Find it if you can
You'll find it in a woman
But seldom in a man.

......and I say this without even knowing if you're M or F b'c I didn't bother to look to see if you used your own name.

My own feeling is that if the online isn't operational by the time the paper comes out then it might be best to keep it up and have a year to tweak it so it is operational and everyone use the paper Yearbook this year as they have in the past.

Certainly it was hoped that it would be operational, but no definite date was ever set that I know of. One major problem that I and others can see is that those SSE members with computers would have an advantage over those with no computers in terms of seed requests and I personally don't think that's fair in terms of computers meaning first dibs on seeds and if some listers run out of seeds it then leaves the non-computer people with possibly no seeds for certain varieties.

They are either working on the site or the database server has collapsed...

I have too agree and disagree with some of the comments. I see the new online version of the Yearbook as a benefit we did not have before, so one year of pain is not really a big deal and not worth not joining or renewing, since we get the hard copy of the Yearbook still.

I must admit, I did some minor volunteer work with SSE on last year's Yearbook and when I was asked about helping with the website, I recommended that they hire the work done for the website. I still think they made the right choice. It does take time for a large system to work correctly. I think the system looks pretty good for a start. Has there been issues, Yes, but in general the website does very well. Was it ready for full release to all members, No, and needed further testing, Yes, but that is easy to say in hind site. I for one am looking forward to the future enhancements and think this is a nice step forward.

Here's my feeling. I look at the online yearbook as "in progress" since it shouldn't be official until the paper version is released.

I just appreciate being able to get a preview of what is to come. Since a variety I was planning on requesting is not listed this year, I was able to revise my grow list early enough to find a substitute. This was very helpful to me because I have to start seed early for my area.

I also appreciate being able to see when that seed was offered in the past, who offered it, and the description.

So, really, I don't expect it to be perfect the minute it goes online...things seldom are. They could have decided not to let us preview it at all. Since we can preview it, we are able to add our suggestions also.

This is new phase and I think we should give it a chance. I do hope, though, that they don't eliminate the printed version. I am not able to sit at the computer too long, so it is nice to be able to relieve my back by reclining in bed while I mark up the yearbook with "sticky" notes.

If they ever do get it working correctly, the big test will be how accurately it compares with the printed yearbook.
Judging from how things are currently going, I expect some big issues.

Tom, almost all the posts in this thread have pointed out that the online is not available at this time for requests to be made from it and the reasons why.

And one of the earlier posts in this thread by bcday gave in information about accessing it for those who were haing problems.

I realize that. What I was posting is that the PURCHASE portion was not working for me at that moment. There are a few things I realized I had omitted, or decided I wanted to try to squeeze in, and the regular online purchasing portion was not working either. I could "shop" but I could not check out.
