About purple Haze. Since it's an F1 hybrid are you growing the F1 plant each year or are you growing from saved seeds from the hybrid.
I get my Purple Haze plants from Fusion each year it's worth the extra cost for the charity he collects for. Fusion mentioned a new one he'd like me to try for next year not sure if it's related to this grow out you are mentioning, Carolyn, but he made it sound very mysterious and one that I would be quite pleased with. Ooooh, hurry up next year!

The impression being that they didn't like the taste of the variety Dr. Carolyn. I have no vested interest in this variety as named by Steve Draper, but I's like to point out that it's derived from Galina's Yellow, a PL gold cherry which many folks like. And it has inherited some of those Galina taste genes so the fruits are not going to have the typical seet flavor of many cherries; it's much more complex.
I know. But I really, REALLY wanted to like them! For the first time this year I tried another tomato you mentioned in your book called, Cuostralee, and the flavor was excellent I'm glad to finally get to try it.

I was surprised, but my Moskvich tomatoes this year had less flavor than store bought Romas, so I guess that's a spitter.

Hey Carolyn thanks for that link. I have actually been looking for that sort of info. I should have known that Keith was the source for such great information. Some of the "blacks" are ok, some are not(hype?). I personally wish we could declare a moratorium on using the word "black" when naming a new variety.

Finally, I think the major difference in growing black varieties in the soth and the north is the greater UV intemsity in the south which often makes them color up darker.
Carolyn, I'm not so sure about that as the Black Bear I'm growing this year was one of the darker blacks I've grown and it was buried in the middle of the plant with little exposure to direct sun light. But if we are talking about flavor I would agree as the touted sweetness of this variety wasn't there on these particular tomatoes I'm referring to. I'm waiting for the fruit that is getting more sun exposure from the sun to ripen to see if there is a flavor difference.

Those usually taste pretty good for me. Maybe they don't like
the heat.

My worst tomato this year is a SunGold imposter (SunGold's momma that didn't get pollinated?). After the initial burst of blandness, one is left with the taste of tomato skin.
