Chocolate Dipped Sungolds - News at 11!

We can sell them by the boxful. No one will even know when they split because the melted chocolate will just glue them right up!

First fruits are sometimes not sweet and mealy, just forget the plant for a week.then try the again. I did have a ton left last September which were green. Put in Bags but were never sweet all, as i grow more and get older i dont enjoy cherries at all. I did love Black Cherry's with nice cheese, but not last summer at all. Same as Juanne Flame, Black cherry, Sungold, Florist, Tumbling Tom, Ground cherry, I am growing Siberian in a lg pot this year looks great so far and gave 3 plants to friend these and small plants but loaded anyone grow them before?

So that is the correct orange, eh? Okay, I'll try waiting. The chipmunks really like them because every time I saw one on the lower branches almost ready (or so I thought) it was gone the next day.thankfully now they are further up on the stems. I also have Black Cherry, Isis Candy and White Rabbit. White Rabbit is nice! Smaller than Sungold, but very nice, I like them.

Chocolate covered sungolds, hmm...maybe that's how I'll get my 13 year old to try fresh tomatoes!

The first time I grew Sungold, I harvested the first few fruits when they were a lighter gold color. We tasted them and thought, "Meh...they're just average."

I got busy and didn't harvest the next few fruits until they were much darker in color (dark orange, not gold at all.) The darker fruits tasted just like sangria. The difference was really dramatic.

I agree with pooklette about the color- you really need to resist the urge to pick until the fruit is really orange, not gold. Even then, I usually only pick one from each cluster each day- the one closest to the stem should be the darkest color. I also don't think they ripen well off the vine which is presenting problems for me this year as a catbird seems to have taken a liking to them- sort of- taking one peck on only the ripest fruit.

I agree I have never had a good example of a Sungold not ripened on the vine all the way to the so called UT orange.

I use netting over my blueberrries to deter the 2 catbirds I have that take every one, even romotely ripe....Could you try some light netting to deter yours, but still be able to harvest easily? Nets can be a pain in the neck....

JB- Yes, we use a double layer of bird netting over our blueberries firmly anchored to the ground and have had good luck this year. The Sungolds are planted along a trellis that's 6' tall but if we netted it the tomatoes would be close enough to the netting that they'd perch and peck like they do the blueberries. Anchoring it would make it a pain to pick every day, too. I've got 4 Sungolds planted this year, which is really too much, so the few that we're losing still leaves me with a harvest every day. Honestly, I hope they continue to go for the cherries and leave the hearts and beefsteaks alone.
