Trying the gwr this year for the first time and hope they are tasty to me. Esmeralda Glossina ( spelling may be off) and Cherokee green, both at the community garden. They are growing well so far, but it is raining again, we've only had a few dry days this last week..
But all the tomatoes seem happy enough, setting blossoms like mad.I do like how the landscape fabric keeps the splash back from them. Got almost all tied up to the wire now, so hopefully they will really take off. |

Actually, I've never tried one before! I mentioned in my original post that I'd planted one out of curiosity this year & lost it due to a cutworm. So now that I'm not growing a GWR this year, it has turned into "you always want what you can't have" situation!

[QUOTE=charline;562403]I am a GWR fan too!
I have lots of varieties, you can see them here http://tomatolover.de.tl/gr.ue.ne.htm Beautiful photos! And that's more GWRs than I even knew existed! Wild Thyme has me curious now.. I'll have to do some reading up on it. Thank you! |

GreenDoctorsFrosted.Yes,a clear epidermis, but most have found that if they put out several plants that there's an epidermis mutation from clear to yellow so it's back to just Green Doctors. All that happened when I first started offering Green Doctors and three folks contacted me and told me what was going on, and as a group we decided to call the clear epi one GD Frosted. Charline, there are two I'd like to send you that I think are outstanding, one is Delano Green Ripe, the other is the original Verdal. Offer for Charline only. Please PM me about my offer since I was going to PM you anyway about another issue, so that would work out just fine. And going through your list it brought back lots of memories as to Charlie's Green,Dorothy's and so many more I grew all those years ago. Carolyn

Back in the 80's I was getting seeds from Gleckler's and they offered quite a few of them, and I loved them since for me they have a somewhat sweet/spicy flavor, so I kept growing more and more. In the early 90's the fad was so called black tomatoes but both Craig L and I said that the next fad would be the GWRipes, and we were right. But the fad for the blacks, and now the anthos, continues. Green Giant and Spear's Tennessee Green.
If you want one that will really change what you and your friends think about GWR varieties, Green Giant is it. Lee

Just my opinion, but I think that folks interested in growing the GWRipes, should grow several varieties in the same summer each year, and then see which ones they prefer for taste, which is why I grow tomatoes, but also yield and general performance as well. Carolyn

I love GWR's! I've not met a bad one yet. I love them all. Humph is my favorite for the flavor and how it grows here. Malachite Box I found to be sweeter than other GWR's at least to my tastebuds. Cherokee Green seems to have lots of ripe ones at the same time more like dets. do.

Honestly, it did not impress me in any way. Maybe it was not one of the best around but it was enough to decide not to grow GWR. But this year I found one (actual tomato at Farmers' Market ) that I liked. So saved seeds and am growing it : COPIA or Green Copia I like it because it is not plain GREEN but multi color Gardeneer |

What about Green Mustang? Has anyone grown that? I can't find much information on it.

Glad to see sohmeone mention Green Copia, I have 7 of them planted this year(out of 86 tomatoes so far). I love it's complex taste and the interior streaking is beautiful. The past two years I've found it to be both hardy and productive. Haven't seen it offered many places, imho it deserves to be better known.

Sean, I am glad to see that someone else is growing it. Are you harvesting yet ? Mine has flowers and the plant is very robust. As you mentioned, it has complex flavor and nice colors both inside and out. I thing GC has the similar flavor/taste to dark/purple tomatoes. Just different from red beefsteaks. Gardeneer |
