RJGlew..I am outside against a south wall as well. I will probably also try some other black/purple that are supposed to be early, need some more go-to ones. I have had luck before with Black Pear, Black Opal and Black Plum.

Great SJamesNorway. Thank you for compiling the list.
For those of you growing Big Beef. .. 2 questions. 1. Are you container or Ground Growing? 2. Is taste the main reason you are growing Big Beef or some other reason such as disease resistance or productivity? I grow in containers and my main criteria is taste (I dont have a problem with productivity and dont have the soil diseases) so I'm curious what the main reason you all love Big Beef is. If it's taste i will try it this fall. Ginny |

I've been growing from seed around 75 varieties the past dozen years in a difficult climate...the Catskills at altitude zone 5a. Full sun and wind helps. I just put a note in my seed box for next year to simplify my main tomato bed. It holds about 30-35 plants.
If i can follow my orders it will have... Cherokee Purple/and chocolate Sun Gold Cuban Yellow They work well together. Cubans for garden snacking. Sun Gold for early salads. Cherokee has just been outstanding for the perfect BLT and all around fresh eating. Surprised to see it does so well for so many different climates. As well as Sun Gold. (we like the Cubans before fully ripe...nice and tart and lovely transparent) Most of my seeds are from saves and TomGrowersSupply. I've grown all their hearts/oxhearts for years now. I still will give them a spot, but in my other beds as well as some new trials. Nothing has performed as well as those three. |

Will be growing these again for sure:
Coyote Brazilian starfish Lemon drop Red savina Carolina reaper Petite Marseillaise Konasu Undecided: Brown Berry Goose creek Additional items (too many to list-about 100 varieties): Spanish tomatoes/peppers French tomatoes Russian tomatoes Ukraine tomatoes Pappy Kerns Tomatoes from the dwarf project Wild boar farm tomatoes Unless I find some more amazing heart tomatoes, my grow list for next year is more or less finalized. |

Ginny, I planted Big Beef this year for the first time...one in-ground and one container. Both plants lived up to the hype. Mine were the most productive of all the 17 plants (14 varieties). They lasted the longest of all plants (now are done). The taste was not comparable to my best heirlooms...but were "very good". I recommend them.

^ My feelings exactly on Big Beef. And taste being a relative thing, they're a great give away tomato. People I know, almost exclusively get supermarket tomatoes and rarely would go to a farmers market. They light up with praise telling me about the taste. Yes, I love Big Beef.
Ginny, I've grown them the last 4 years in raised beds. Two of those years were terrible conditions, cold wet Springs and blazing Summer heat. The Big Beef outproduced my other tomatoes every year and in the good years they were absolute mules. Last edited by Ricky Shaw; September 14, 2015 at 10:57 PM. |

Ed and Ricky,
Thanks for the input. I have several neighbors that fall into the category of ones that i think will really like Big Beef. They couldn't care less about the "strange looking" tomatoes... lol. After I saw how many people grow it, I started some seeds for the fall crop. Thanks again for the feed back! Ginny Sent from my SAMSUNG-SM-N910A using Tapatalk |

Tried some dwarves this year, some from the Dwarf Project, some Russian commercial varieties. And then tried a couple just for earliness. My mountain garden has a short, cool, dry season which is very limiting.
Old favorites that will return: Amber Colored (determinate) Glacier (PL determinate) Maritime Pink (indeterminate) New tomatoes that will return: Klusha (Russian determinate dwarf, prolific) Perth Pride (indeterminate dwarf, second chance to shine) Rosso Sicilian (indeterminate, sauce) Siletz (determinate, prolific) Sleeping Lady (indeterminate dwarf, tasty) Talaliknin 186 (Russian compact determinate) Volgogradskiy 323 (Russian compact determinate dwarf, rugose foliage, nice size) Yukon Quest (indeterminate dwarf, second chance to shine) |

For those liking Grighmire Pride, I suggest checking out Mayo Delight- grown side by side MD outdid GP in taste and production. Both are keepers though.
