Polish Giant?
Hi,
I went to look up info on Polish Giant which I grew this year. Seems to be a lot of conflicting info! I read red on some sites, pink on others. Also some site list regular leaf and others potato. Mine was pink and potato leaf. I have no clue if I have really grown Polish Giant! Remy

Sounds like my Polish-C. I grew it from seed obtained at Sandhill Preservation.

Jim,
I grew a lot of Polish varieties this year~ Polish Ellis, Eckert's Polish, Soldaki, and even Polish Dwarf! but of course I did not grow Polish C which I do have seeds for. So I unfortunately have no comparison. I do know the Polish Giant is none of the varieties I grew. Remy

Well, remy, you've got me interested in another one now...Eckert Polish...my wife's maiden was Eckert.
Sorry to just drop that in here like that...as I've never grown Polish Giant before, so I can't comment on that. |

Remy, Polish Giant is only listed in the PINK section of the SSE Yearbooks and as RL.
It gets a bit complicated b'c Amy Goldman listed a Polish Giant Beefsteak ( the complete name) in 2008, also pink and also RL. It isn't clear how these two might be related. The first one was from Totally Tomatoes in 1998 and the second one was from an SSE accession, originally unnamed, in 1995 from someone in Denver. Polish C it's not. That's a variety I got from SSE member Robert Richardson in 1994 and listed in the 1995 or 96 Yearbook and should be PL, but there's also a RL version around. If I were to list here all the varieties that have Polish as the first word in the variety name is would be a very very long list indeed. Polish ( Ellis), from Bill Ellis of PA is one of my faves as is Eckert Polish, as well as Polish C as either PL or RL. Yes, there once were Polish A and B's but no one knows where they went.

Carolyn,
Thanks for the info. Well, it is a nice beefsteak and the tomato seeds will go into the unknown pile. Jim, Good to know. I will have to add Polish C to next years grow list. MJC, Eckert's is a great tomato! The plants got massive and have had lots of wonderful deep pink beefsteaks. I'm not sure why it isn't better known. You do need to grow it for your wife. Remy

I hope Sandhill has it again next year, otherwise, I may be hitting you up for some seed...
