Night temps to fall below 50 degrees...

For the next 3 or 4 days we are to have highs in the low 70's and lows in the high 40's. Should I cover plants to prevent blossom drop or are these temps OK?

I'd love to swap weather with you for those 3 or 4 days. Temps in the 90s, 100 per cent humidity, with thunderstorms every afternoon.
Seriously you shouldn't have any problems. I don't recall ever having any serious damage from cool nights without temps getting below the mid 30s.

I'm with b5, you're so stinkin' lucky! Our weather here in VA has been exactly like his(?hers?), except no rain.

This is a 'normal' summer weather here in Anmore (PNW). Low in mid-high 40s, and high in 65-75F. We may have a week or two when temps are higher than this. So I'd say these temps are OK

Although I grow about 60% of my tomatoes under cover, 40% still go into the open ground, and they do OK at these temps.

We are expected to have the same weather in the Hudson Valley as well. Over the last week of temps in the upper 80's and 90's and nights in the 70's and high humidity I think the blossoms have been having a hard time fertilizing. I think the lower temps will help.

I don't know where you are in the Hudson Valley, for it's a long valley, but I'm in the upper reaches above Albany, a bit East on the Vt border and same forcast here. Actually I just shut the sliding doors b'c the temps have been dropping since this AM. WHoops, temps went back up to 81 as I type looking at my indoor/outdoor digital thingie which sits atop my CPU, but I know they will go down again and pretty quickly at that.

I wouldn't worry one bit about temps in the mid to high 40's, been there, done that, old age tomato wisdom rises again.
