Preacher Joe
Where did preacher joe come from? Not one of those mis-named "brandy wine" I hope. My plant is one of the best in the 35 varieties I have. It is looking better than cowlick and the others, except for a pruden's purple. We will see how it turns out.
Seed came from a nice lady (D. I think G.G.) with some others. So nice of her. KennyP |

No, not a Brandywine. Above is the history of this variety and Google also brought up a link to Tville but the only info there was that it was in a grow list that Camo posted here last year and he's the one in this link who says where it came from, and it's red. When you asked about it being a misnamed Brandywine I kind of thought maybe you were referring to a pink fruited variety.

Thanks Carolyn. Maybe I better apologize for my snide remark about brandywine. I just think the name has been over used and I doubt that any of them came from a "little ol amish lady in the brandy wine valley.
Any way, back tracking to Danasgarden place I found this: Beefsteak Tomatoes-Red Preacher Joe 80 days. Indeterminate. These large, flattened, solid, meaty, juicy, brilliantly red fruits are slightly ribbed and weigh up to 2 lbs each. The Fleischman family reselection of a beefsteak variety. An excellent slicer, great for one slice sandwiches. Full acidic big tomato flavor, even in last year's wet summer. I have great hopes for it. KennyP |

Kenny,
Preacher Joe was grown by me for the first time last season. It's a great red tomato. Very tasty! The only red to beat it last year was Tarasenko6. Now last year was very wet and cool here. So far this year has been very hot and dry, I have a few Preacher Joe's out in the gardens, so it will be interesting to see how they do this year with opposite weather patterns. So far, they are the healthiest looking plants out there and only the Tarasenko6 are taller. Good luck with yours and let us know your opinon when they ripen. Happy Gardening Camo |
