Jaune Flammée and ???
This was my first year growing Jaune Flammée and it's been a real winner. Fantastic flavor, great texture and very productive so far - not to mention it's absolutely beautiful.
Here's a question for anyone who's grown and loves Flammée: Can you recommend other tomatoes that are similar in size, taste and texture? I'm looking for another tomato - maybe a red or black - to pair with it in 2011. |

And I find trying to match up tastes and textures of any variety with similar varieties of another color to be difficult if not impossible. What I can do is list some varieties that I think are somewhat similar to Jaune in terms of color, size and shape and close in taste and they might include: Earl of Edgecombe, highly suggest Tangella, ditto Gold Ball Cerise Orange Orange-1 And I'm sure others will chime in with other suggestions, and not necessarily keeping to the orange category of something resembling Jaune Flammee.

I'm growing Earl of Edgecombe, too. Unfortunately, our friendly neighborhood raccoon seems to favor this variety - he's eaten the first couple to blush. We'll get one yet, I'm sure.
How about small reds in the vein of Jaune Flammée? |

I am growing Bulgarian triumph this year and have grown Jaune Flammee in the past. Bulgarian Triumph might suit you, they are red, slightly bigger than a cherry and have a really nice sweet tangy flavor.
They're very good fresh but I'm not fond of small tomatoes. I was looking for something to use for roasted tomatoes. While Bulgarian triumph is quite juicy, I split them in half, put them in the oven for a few hours and they have been fabulous. |

I just picked some Jaune Flamme for market today. They are beautiful and very intensely flavored. The fruit is larger than a cherry tomato - more like what we call a salad tomato, where you would quarter them for a fresh salad. There are a number of excellent salad types. This year I like Little Lucky , a bicolor heart, and Beduin, a pear-shaped 'black' tomato, along with old favorites like Orange Banana, Amy's Sugar Gem and Oaxacan Jewel - there are just too many to list! Here's a photo, though.

A variety I love that is about the same size and color is Orange Pixie. It is a dwarf plant so does well in a large pot. The other dif from Jaune Flamme is that is doesn't have the hint of red that JF has so Orange Pixie has a bit of a more fruity flavor. Quite similar to Sun Gold/Sun Sugar in flavor. Seeds are available several places.
There was also a red version named Pixie. Both were Burpee varieties but the red one was discontinued around 2001 +-. But I have been saving seed from grow-outs and it does produce a lot of golf ball red tomatoes. I won't comment on flavor as I don't like regular red tomatoes much at all. I'm a orange, pink and purple person. Matina and Russian Apple Tree are smaller plants that are early small red tomatoes that have been very productive for me. Fruit are in the golf ball to slightly larger size. Some sites say those are the same variety but last year RAT was definately a bit different and better for me. I've grown Sungella several times and wasn't impressed with the flavor at all. I'm growing Tangella and Earl of Edgecomb this year but don't have any tomatoes yet. Czech's Excellent Yellow is another yellow-orangy small fruited variety that has been quite prolific for me. Carol |

I am pairing up Juane Flamme with Wapsipinican peach which is my fav small tomato along with Early girl improved version. I am also growing Bulgarian Triumph, Gigant Palina, PSR-37 (open pollinated early girl), and New Yorker for comparisons against the others.
