So now that this part of the mystery is solved, any idea how you got these seeds, Filmnet? You claimed the plants were from the Sungold F1 seeds that I gave you.

Yes, this came from Japan, the company from there made Sungold years ago, this is their new one. I had a website about them, but lost the print/website i made a print from them, So Sungold and Tomatobeery Garden f1 are hybrid's maybe came from the same company after all.

So did you get Sungold seeds from another source other than me? Or should I expect to possibly see a Tomatoberry plant from my current packet of Sungold seeds?

But I'm cofused. Kath says she sent you Sungold F1 seeds and I assume you raised your plants from those seeds. But now you say you have Tomatoberry F1 but Kath didn't send you those seeds. Please help me understand.

I have tomato berry F1 growing this year and your fruits in your picture do not look very red and tomatoberry is a very red tomato. I purchased seeds from johny's (11 seeds for $5) planted 5 seeds one germinated. Taste wise they are pretty good sweet a little firm and fairly thick skinned.

Carolyn, I was wondering how companies make Hybrid seeds, Kathy got these Sungold seeds from a company in Maine. They must have gotten them from someone else right ? Where do they get hybrid seeds to sell? These are sure Toamtoberry's they take a long time to ripe, taste terrible until very red, tough skin also. I did visit my brother in law, I planted a Sungold for them 3 months ago, Its a Tomatoberry plant also. I grew 5-6 plants from Kathy's seeds, i find now, 3 are correct and 2 are wrong ones. This is my first year growing Heirlooms, so i don't understand enough. This is way over my head!!!!!

One warning about those Tomatoberry fruits --
Since they are F-1 hybrid and bred by the same company that bred the complicated hybrid Sungold, these are a rather complicated hybrid too. Last year I wanted to try Tomatoberry. I found a source of seeds that wasn't quite as pricy as most of the other sites. I grew out at least 40 plants from those seeds and not a 1 of the plants gave me anything at all like Tomatoberry. A few were somewhat small, like very large cherries or even as large as a Matina. But most were various size oxhearts, some nearly 1 lb in size. So the seed I go was some F number of a growout but definately not the F-1. From the large variation in shapes and sizes, I would say it's another complicated hybrid and not worth the time it will take to de-hybridize. Carol |

I have a couple more questions, Filmnet.
First, are you sure they are Tomatoberry? When you 1st posted pics, that's what they reminded me of, but your description of them was larger than Tomatoberry is supposed to be and the color doesn't seem right either; then your taste description seemed to conflict with those who really like the flavor and Johnny's tendency to carry good tasting varieties. Second, are you sure these plants came from the Pinetree Garden seeds I sent you in response to your Feb. request for Sungold F1 seed? I ask because you requested Sungolds back in Nov. '09 and folks offered you various dehybridized versions, which could produce most anything. Also, in March of this year, after you put out yet another request for Sungold F1 seed, habitatgardener sent you 9 more seeds. Did you grow out any of those? Third, you now claim to have grown 5-6 plants from the seed I sent you, but in your March 10 post, you complained that I only sent you 4 seeds (not true), hence your request for more Sungold F1 seed. How is this possible? And yes, I have had only Sungold fruits since June from plants grown from the same seed that I sent to you. |

My plants are in new dirt the fruits are a little bigger, and they look like hearts as they ripping. Maybe i did get sungold from others? but i remember someone did send me seeds once, 5 different ones with out Sungold,I though they were so i got some some from you later. |

That shot above is one i shot of a ripe one, they get really red. but that shot on the website looks fate, or they pushed color in photoshop. Very easy to do, each fruit looks the same. Which means a nice one was use, and the same one is use 7 times.

Maybe it is just the extreme close up of your pic but it looks more orange then red to me. I will take a shot of mine in the next couple of days since it is suppose to be cloudy and storm off an on today and tomorrow.
Carol I did save quite a few F2 seeds but not sure I will ever be growing them out but thought on the off chance I get unlimited space then I might grow them out. Craig |
