Default Passive Aphid, Whitefly Sticky Trap (pics)

Happened to pick up a few of these at a Hydro Shop to try to passively (without Insecticides) control Aphids and Whiteflies:

It peels apart so you can cut it into two sections and hang on the tomato cages:

Only downside I see is that it could trap Beneficials as well. So far, no bees have been snagged, which is something I am watching. About $3.00 a piece.

We had a huge infestation on plants in a greenhouse at one point and I watched whiteflies actually bounce off of the commercial traps, so I coated yellow plastic drink cups with Tree Tanglefoot (the glue on fly paper). It worked wonderfully. Nothing ever escaped and the glue was thick enough to stay active for several years. The cups (mouth down) could be placed on the benches or placed on sticks in the larger pots. The cost was a fraction of that for expensive card traps.

I don't know if the fly paper is the right color to attract them, but its worth a try. They love the bright yellow. Shake a plant and they fly right to it.

Go to any art supply shop (or good office supply) and get poster paper in colors to match the flower colors you are trying to protect. Most good non-drying sticky glues will work. You might try covering them with a clear acrylic spray to increase their water resistance before applying the stick-em.

I think a coat of castor oil would work.

I don't think castor oil has the tackiness that will trap and hold the insects:

I regularly find termites stuck to my model airplanes when I'm too lazy to clean them after a days flying. If it will stick termites, it should stick whiteflies. It could be that castor that has gone thru an engine is different than raw castor.
