The last hurrah of Fall

The attached photos are the fall tomatoes I picked about a week ago when we had 2 freezing nights in a row. It appears that some of the green ones I picked will indeed ripen. Yea! These were grown in a Raybo Earthtainer on my driveway. I was able to move them to chase the sun and about 3 weeks ago, we had a one night freeze and a I moved them into the garage. Glad I did! They don't taste like summer tomatoes, but they are a whale of a lot better than grocery store bought this time of year!

Have you been borrowing equipment from your son? Bringing a whole new meaning to the term grow house! It'll be intersting to see if you can get enough light (natural and artificial). Do you ever move around your tainers? For us we usually end up from some freezing nights sporadically, but frequently don't have long freezing stretches. I need to move the tainers into a heated garage and back out again, without damaging the bottom. Right now I put a "track" of 2, 2x4s down and slide the tainers on top of them.

The HydroFarm light and Lumatek Balast system (along with a bottle of Roots Excelurator, Floramato and other nutrients) were my Christmas present from my son. Beats a pair of socks or tie any day.

The artificial lighting is intended to supplement the outdoor sunshine, as my plan is to run the 400 Watt HPS lamp from 4:00pm to 8:00pm only.

I don't attempt to move the 'Tainers around other than to rotate them 180 degrees before the vines hit the support netting layers. You could get some inexpensive moving dollies at Harbor Freight or Home Depot to put your 'Tainers on, if you intend to have a "mobile" garden.
