HoosierDaddy's seed starting list
The first round of tomato seed starting is done. These are for plants that I will set out in mid-late April in WaterWalls -aka Kozy Coats (This is about 3 to 4 weeks before our annual last frost date here in zone 5 SE Michigan)
I will also start a backup batch of seeds in a few weeks in case a late cold snap kills off the early outdoor planting. This year's tomato plant list is (* = plants I grew last year): Big Beef * Berkeley Tie-Dye Heart Black Crimson (Black Crim, Black Krin whatever it is called) * Brandywine - Sudduths * Cherokee Purple Italian Heirloom * J D's Special C Tex Kosovo Marianna's Peace Paul Robeson San Marzona Redorta Black Cherry Sungold F1 Cherry * Last edited by HoosierDaddy; February 26, 2011 at 04:07 PM. |

My plan is very near yours as I will try "wall-o-water"s for at least nine varieties putting them out in mid-April. I'm using them for the first time this year and I am being a little conservative as the package says it will allow 6 to 8 weeks early. I'll try 4 weeks early and see how that goes. Good luck with your earliest.

My neighbor told me about her car mechanic who puts his tomatoes out in early April. I thought he was nuts and it was a joke but it may be real. I put mine out last year around April 20th. Tomatoes and Sweet Peppers grew fine except the top of a cherry tomato plant that outgrew the Kozy Coat.
You should do better down in Indy. Indy is about 5 degrees warmer than SE Michigan. At least is was when I lived in Fishers a few years ago. Maybe I'll have the nerve to put mine out around April 15th this year in the Water Walls. |

Hoosier- I grew BTDH for the first time last year, it was awsome, I loved it. You cant go wrong with Kosovo either, I have been growing it for 3 years now, its a staple in my garden.
