Color of Lucky Cross when ripe

I picked 2 Lucky Cross tomatoes yesterday and I'm having trouble determining when they are ready to eat.

To the touch, they feel ready. But pictures I've seen seem to show them more red than yellow and mine are more yellow than red.

Are these horribly catfaced beauties ready to eat? :wink:

If they feel ready to eat, I'd say go for it. In my experience the bi-colors tend to vary a lot as to how much red they get on the outside. Some may have a lot, some may have very little and be mostly yellow or almost solid yellow, even on the same plant. Some of the ads for Big Rainbow say this specifically. So feel is the best way to go in determining ripeness.

Once I grew an unknown bi-color that was supposed to be a red tomato variety. I kept letting them go bad waiting for them to get "ripe", until a friend pointed out that I had a bi-color variety. Doh!

In my defense, I had not even purchased any seeds of any bi-color varieties, so I just hadn't even conceived of the idea that it could be a bi-color tomato. I felt so stupid. When I finally ate a ripe one, they were so tasty I felt really bad for letting so many rot on the vine like I had done. What a waste!

Been growing LC for four years now--they are always a bit more yellow than some of the pictures I see posted here. Mine are primarily yellow with red bleeding on the inside, with mild red blushing especially on the blossom end.

Zone 6 Southern Illinois.
