This Morning's Tomatoes

A couple of new varieties that ripened and some that I've been able to enjoy already. All in a pile

tomatoes so fantastic that you have Mr. Randall ................. I have not yet matured me, and I delayed in planting.

Here's my cut on flavor and favorites in that photo:

Great White - sweet, excellent

Hawaiian Pineapple - sweet, excellent. better yield than all other bi-colors for me. will grow again next yr

Lucky Cross - complex, outstanding will grow again

Amish Paste - sweet, excellent. new favorite for making sauce.

Cherokee Purple - excellent as always but Amazon Chocolate PL slightly better

Gary'O Sena - excellent black tomato flavor and on the sweet side probably grow again

Vorlon - excellent but Gary'O Sena was just a little better

Amazon Chocolate PL - best of the blacks in my garden this year. i'll definitely grow again next year

Orange Strawberry - excellent, meaty will be growing again next yr

Kellogg's Breakfast - excellent for sure, but Orange Strawberry was just a little better

Red Brandywine (landis) - excellent and still my favorite red

Brandywine, Cowlick's - outstanding and just a bit better than Sudduth will be growing again next yr

Hoy - very good and big tomatoes but for a pink beefsteak, Brandywine is a much better choice

Aker's WV - great tomato but for a red, Red Brandywine was much better

Grub's Mystery Green - favorite GWR so far. will grow again

Polish Linguisa - excellent sauce tomato will grow again

still waiting on a few more varieties but so far, i'd say favorites are:

Lucky Cross
Amish Paste
Brandywine, Cowlick's
Red Brandywine
Amazon Chocolate PL
Grub's Mystery Green
Orange Strawberry

Very subjective and just how it went in my growing zone/garden!

Wow- thanks for the rundown, Randall! I'm trying Orange Strawberry again and hoping for the right color fruits this time. Also hoping I like it as much as you and a few others who I recall having sung its praises here in T'ville!

Btw, I was curious as to whether you've tried Aunt Ruby's German Green for a gwr because you seem to appreciate a sweet tomato and I preferred this one to Grub's Mystery Green.

I'm not sure if you have had a ripe one yet, but how did Terhune compare to the two Brandywine's (Cowlicks and Sudduths)?

@Baikal - I bet you will have ripe tomatoes soon!

@Kathy - I grew ARGG last year and really loved it. I had every intention of growing it again this year. Somehow, I gave 10 plants to my neighbor, ARGG being one of them while thinking I had grown 2 ARGG. I had only grown one! I could've kicked myself but her plants are doing really well and I'm sure she'll let me have one to compare to Grub's and Emerald Evergreen this season

@mark - The final results for me on Terhune vs. Sudduth vs. Cowlick's (in my garden):

Cowlick's takes first prize for yield, taste and visual appeal also. It makes a lot more tomatoes that are nicely shaped without catfacing, etc. It is without a doubt the winner!

Sudduth's is close behind Cowlick's in yield, very close (but not quite) as tasty and tends to throw more mis-shaped tomatoes.

Terhune: While I had expected this tomato to taste like a Brandywine, it didn't at all. It was it's own animal. It was every bit as juicy as Brandywine but had more of a mild taste. I can see it being favorited by people looking for a mild tasting pink. It's by no means tasteless, but it simply doesn't have that intense punch of spicy, complex tomato flavor that I like about Brandywines.

A couple of others that ripened up to try:

Ananas Noire - One of the prettiest tomatoes when sliced. Citrusy and slightly sweet. I was hoping for it to be a little sweeter. The taste is very good though and like many other reports I've read, it doesn't have a very long shelf life after being picked. If it wasn't so darn pretty I probably wouldn't grow it again. I'll end up saving a spot for it next year.

Isis Candy - Very nice looking. So far, it hasn't had an impressive taste at all. I'm hoping it will come around a little later in the season.

Italian Heirloom - I was really surprised at how sweet and full flavored this tomato was. It was really meaty and there was very little waste due to stem/blossom end/core. I have to say it's excellent and has had a very good yield to boot. Will be growing this one again along with Red Brandywine.

Brandywine from Croatia - Definitely not a Brandywine, but a very good tomato. A really healthy plant with a very good yield. If I had to rate on a scale of 1-10, I'd give this one a 7.5

Lillian's Yellow Heirloom - Outstanding! The best yellow tomato I've ever tasted. It was the last tomato to ripen for me but it looks like it is going to have a very good yield. I wish I would've grown more than one plant! I can't wait to grow this one again next year. I'll be planting a couple or 5 of them A new favorite tomato!

Golden Cherokee - An excellent bi-colored tomato. If I didn't like Hawaiian Pineapple and Lucky Cross so much, I'd probably grow this one out again next year. Heck, I might still grow it again!

I believe that's all but If I left any out, I'll make sure to update again. I hope to downsize the number of varieties I grow next year and maybe just add one or two new ones to try.
