Default Best of the potato-leaf varieties?

I've found I have a soft-spot for these, "pink brandy-wine" is my absolute favorite. This year I've also planted "hillbilly". What other great potato-leaf varieties exist out there?

Brandywine Sudduth's is considered by many to be the best pink Brandywine, and I think the original. I also love KBX potato leaf (an orange tomato). Captain Lucky also, a wonderful tri-color.

There are so many good pink potato leaf varieties. To name a few...
  • Earl's Faux
  • Terhune
  • Stump of the World
  • Hege German Pink
OOPS! Looks like Hege German Pink is not a PL.

Brandywine-Sudduth for a pink, KBX for an orange (tangerine), Captain Lucky for a GWR-bicolor, Captain Lucky White for a pale cream yellow, Big Cheef for a purple, and for a red PL I'd say a particular recombination of Brandywine x Neves Azorean Red that remains unnamed at this time.

Isn't Hege German Pink a regular leaf tomato?

Oh yes, I'll vote for Terhune and Earl's Faux too.

Lucky Cross didn't blow me away, I prefer it's "child" Captain Lucky.

So, the Cherokee Purple PL I bought from Sandhill Preservation is Spudakee?

Im growing a PL that is just called plain "Brandywine" on the seed packet (from Johnny's). Is there a difference between this and Suddeth Brandywine or Pink Brandywine? This is my first year growing heirlooms and I was hoping I picked out something good.

Also, I don't see my other Potato Leaf, "Japanese Trifle", on anyone's list. I have lots of fruit set, but I've never tasted it so don't know what to expect.

Maybe so and maybe not. I think that is an argument that has never been settled.

There are two Cherokee Purples that are PL. One was found by Jere Gettle and is called Cherokee Purple Potato Leaf, Spudakee was found and named by Bill Malin.

Are the two PL ones the same?

Several folks have grown both in the same year along with the original CP for comparison and there's differences of opinion on the difference between the two PL's and either one of the PL's and the original RL.

One can't just assume that a PL version of an original RL is the same except for leaf form b'c there are many kinds of mutations that can occur going from an RL to a PL.

If it's a single spontaeous mutation of one gene, OK, but there are other ways in which the DNA changes such as repeats, inversions, looping out, etc,, in which case more than one gene can be involved,

Which is why I, for one , never assume apriori that a PL versions of original RL's are the same except for a one gene mutation that changed only the leaf form/

I know, too much to post, but I'm here and I do have strong feelings about the issue.

Jere Gettle's Cherokee Purple Potato Leaf was found in a garden in Missouri and is not the same as Spudakee which was found in a garden in Ohio.

Wow, overwhelmed with information but in a good way! LOL I'm looking all these up. A nice purple would be great... I didn't have good luck with "carbon" last year.

I believe what I have is sudduth's strain. I've collected seed from this same plant so many years in row that I can't be sure anymore. It's amazing. I cooked burgers and made BLT's in honor of a freshly picked beauty many times last summer. LOL They are too good not to savor. I only wish the branches were a bit stronger. I had quite a few snap off from the sheer weight of a fruit set last year. If anyone has suggestions for that, I'm all ears.

Has anyone grown the one I keep coming across simply named "yellow brandywine"? Can you compare it to other yellows? I have dr. wyche's this year.
