How to best enjoy a fresh tomato ?
I know it has been asked before but we have a lot of new people now and I would like to know how you eat a fresh tomato. I prefer just salt and pepper unless it is on a bacon,tomato and sharp cheddar sandwich on sourdough bread with helmans real mayonnaise.
There are lots of options, how do you like yours the best? ron |

Depends on the tomato, doesn't it? Sungolds and Black Cherries usually don't make it more than a couple of feet from the plant before consumption. Brandywine or Black from Tula or Aunt Ruby's German Green just get chunked up and sprinkled with sea salt. Juliets or Costaluto Genovese often get cubed up small for pico di gallo or fresh salsa. Sandwiches get whatever tomato is ripe and handy at the moment.

No doubt: Olive oil and a dash of balsamic vinegar for large ones. Cherries, straight off the vine!

Sun-warmed fresh from the plant, if it's a cherry or the rare one I didn't manage to pick at first blush.
Sliced thickly in a drippy open-face tomato sandwich on garlic sourdough bread (or an herb ciabatta roll) with avocado and red onion, topped with some greens from the garden. Several saladettes or medium-size tomatoes as a hydrating snack, if I'm working in the garden. (Thinking of the Japanese vending machines with bags of tomatoes) Sliced or chunked on a plate for comparative taste tests. |

Ill jump on this one.
The best way to eat a fresh tomato is right off the vine early in the morning. Before anything, coffee, smokes, or even brushing your teeth. Just drag your hind end up out of bed and go to the garden dont even get dressed go naked if you have to. Stand out there in all your bare foot glory and taste something of you labors and suck in the freshness. Worth |

Worth..I AGREE!! I can't tell you how many times I've been out there before anyone else has woke up, just taking notes on what they need for the day, and I sneak one in my mouth!! It's the BEST!!

It also depends on when it's picked. The FIRST one off each plant get cut up and 'tested' by wifey and the kids!! After that, BLT's and tomato salad!

in the early AM - with toast and thin slice of sharp cheddar.
Noon - toast, bacon and mayo. Evening - sliced or dices on a salad (cherries whole).

I'll have to agree with fresh from the vine.... but wait a minute! It's February here, shouldn't this question be, how to best enjoy a frozen tomato?

Cherries, just pull off the vine and pop in my mouth.
Full size, cut in half, put some salt on the innards and eat. If I'm ambitious, slice and make a tomato, cheese and Miracle Whip on whole wheat sandwich. Irv |

Since the only meat I eat is turkey and chicken I like a slice of tomato on a turkey rye bread sandwich with mayo and a slice of farmer cheese or cheddar! Store tomatoes just don't do it but the gsarden ones make it fantastic! I like the pineapple tomato about the best!

First a whole wheat roll or homemade sourdough English muffin is spread with reserved bacon fat and placed in a hot skillet. While it toasts, the tomato is sliced. The smaller slices are sprinkled with a touch of salt and eaten while waiting for the bread to toast. Once the bread is ready, it's spread with a thin layer of mayo, and topped with the two largest tomato slices.
