Default Polar vortex chill exterminated 95 percent of stink bugs.

I hope the American cockroach population here went down as well...darn things are big enough to carry off small children and pets around here.

If you walk down the hall to the geology department, I believe you can find some fossilized remains of cockroaches up to 1 meter in length.

There is an upside to everything, even hurricanes.

I'm glad we don't have cockroaches around here. As a young man, I repaired electronics shipped to me from all over and sometimes cockroaches would jump out when I opened the covers. I buttoned the units back up and returned them, unrepaired.

The only thing I see this year is really small crab spiders, no bugs.

so i have 2 observations.

1. why wouldn't the cold have killed beneficials too? that knife probably cuts both ways.

2. so 5% survived. the good news is there will be far less stink bugs around this year and that's a good thing. the bad news is those 5% that survived, well they will breed and guess what? yep those that hatch may well have inherited the ability to withstand sub zero temperatures too.

just filled with wonderful observations and pleasant news today.

They didn't die. I swear they're all hiding in my shed.

Let's hope so!! They did a number late in the season on my toms!!

It would be nice to keep this going as the summer goes along and see if we notice a difference!

I think unseasonably cold weather killed most of our cucumber beetles...

I would argue the survivors are probably more a function of "right place, right time" than any genetic predisposition to surviving cold.
