Celebrity fooled me...me thinks

Well, I had read that Celebrity was determinate...then "semi"-determinate...now I see some say indeterminate. I grew this years ago, but my memory is not clear on it. The plant I put in the container 4-5 weeks ago is rising like Jack's bean stock, and has at least 6-7 fruit already. I HAD to stake it today. I have a feeling my 3 foot high bamboo stake might lay short in a month or so. What can I really expect???

I would say they are semi determinate, mine produced through a very long season last year, and also were heavy producers of pretty darn good fruit. I have grown them off and on for several years.

I would agree.

It has been a top producer for me and a little 3 foot stake aint gonna happen.

The celebrity I have grown in the past was called "bush celebrity" and was a big determinate. There may be more than one?

Assuming you have a fairly long growing season in Cali I think you will need much more support.

OK, I do not like the taste of Celebrity F1 and never will.The Cornell Coop Extension was doing a disease survey on the tomatoes being grown by me in my tomato field, and it was they who asked me to include it for sake of comparison.

Because of all of the disease tolerances bred in it's been found to be a good rootstock to graft to.This was found by Dr. David Francis at Ohio State U when comparing different rootstocks for both outside growing as compared to greenhouse growing.

funny about people's tastes isn't it?...anyway, thankyou for the head's-up on needing to recruit more support in the future. I suspected this one was NOT going to be a small bush-type after I saw a month's growth.

There currently are two types of Celebrity available, Celebrity and Celebrity Supreme, the former being green shouldered and the latter being uniform ripening, light green shouldered.

Both require a 5-foot wire cage, and will produce fruit across a broad window, which is why many home gardeners refer to them as "semi-determinate."

The seed vendors simply call Celebrity a determinate because most breeders and vendors do not include "semi-determinate" as a category in their release notices and catalog blurbs.
