Will the hype machine accompany?
Of course. Ever since Minnie's Big Zac was offered I've looked at the weight of the fruits that folks have reported and none have come near to what she gets/got with the fruits she enters in the NJ Tomato Contest. Actually there are others, all OP's, that I and others have grown that have the genetic capacity to grow as large or larger than what most folks get with Big Zac. But the hype is there and folks who grow for competition size fruits want Big Zac, totally forgetting that the current World 's Record, held by Gordan Graham, now deceased, was a fruit that weighed 6# 12 oz, and that's with the readily available variety Delicious. And so it goes.

How is your PM going, Manto?
I'm expecting big things from it and you. Grub, off to the post office to send those Sophie's seeds and a few books Up Over. Sorry for the delay. One heck of a working month. |

Since I only have one seed left from the 10 I got 3 seasons ago, I am THRILLED!
Big Zac has turned out to be one of the best tasting red beefsteak tomatoes I've eaten. It is VERY productive, and every tomato I've eaten has consistently tasted great 2 years running. No other red beefsteak I've grown has matched it. So what is this so-called "hype machine" about?? |

Carolyn, barkeater,
I know nothing about Big Zac, but I feel the same way about "Delicious" that bark feels about Big Zac. I don't grow Delicious for size, but for taste. Too bad it's so late and unproductive. Most people say it tastes blah..... =gregg= |

With our move in the wings, I'm not sure how the garden will fare next year but have stated that we will need to make room in the moving van for some tomato plants. Michael's Portuguese Monster is one of them. My DH's dad seems a willing soul so I may start several seeds for him to raise. I want him to have a few Dopeys as well since I don't know what my predicament will be come next summer. I suspect that all of my garden will be of the container variety but I said that last year, LOL. Who knows? Lori

Big Zac Returns?
Glad to see the "Big One" back, I grew a Big Zac this year that weighed in at 3lb 4oz and was down to my last two original seeds for 2007 Garden.
Later....Spider

Hey Grub, no worries if the Sophie's seeds don't get here right away - it will get up to minus 20 C or so today, a high of minus 23 C on Sunday - mine won't need to be planted any time soon! Enjoy your time on the boat, mate.

I do hope my (Michael's Portuguese monster ) lives up to expectations alright, but if the size of the original tomatoes was anything to go by-it should give Big Zac a good run for its money, as they were bigger than that.
But as Mantis says- they appear to have huge flowers size on them, so its a good sign along the right track, for a start. I sent out over fifty examples of the seed to all over the world-mainly in the USA, so we should see some good sport- and a winner emerging about next august/sept. I am as excited about it as all the rest of you and will be growing Big Zac as well just for comparisons sake. Some of my seed went to some very well know tomato growers on TV- some of the best,- much better than me probably, so we can expect some astonishing results at the final weigh in- but the differing types of soil and conditions in different parts of the world and temps etc, will prove which suits it best. |

MICHAEL,
Well, THAT explains why I did NOT get any of your seeds re: "some very well know tomato growers on TV- some of the best,". I am neither well known OR the best, lol. J/K about not getting any, Best Regards; bluelytes |
