Plants Arrived
My tomato plants arrived this a.m. Excellent packaging. Some of the plants really looked limp. They're in the ground with lots of water and Alaska fish fertilizer. I hope they will spring back up. I buried them about 3/4 of plant deep. Added soil mix and then top soil. Top soil is very clay like.

From Laurels Heirloom. Kelloggs Breakfast, Pineapple, Blondkoepfchen, Anna Russian, A.R. Banana.
A couple plants look very limp and feel somewhat dry to the touch. The root system on all is still very good. So I hope with good watering, fertilizer and plenty of sun, they will improve. Working with my clay soil was kind of a pain in the butt. I dug each plant about 2/3 deep. Roots have full coverage with pro mix and the rest with my clay soil. Sometimes having fluffy soil just isn't possible. Not sure if I should have filled each hole entirely with pro mix or similar, rather then adding my clay soil. Is it safe to water daily or every other day. especially if temps are 80 and 90+. So Im pretty nervous about my plants. Is it still safe to amend holes of clay soil with rabbit manure/hay? There would be no damage to roots since I just planted less than 48 hours ago. |

I can't help with the questions because I usually grow in pots but I have purchased tomato plants before that had a hard time in shipping and they bounced right back. Yours should as well. I'm sure others will answer your questions. :♧
Good luck and happy gardening! Ginny |

I hope that you watered your plants in well and that they have perked up a bit by now. Mixing your Pro Mix with your soil was much better than using the mix alone. If you had used it alone all that you would have done was to create a pot underground for the plants. Their roots would never have ventured out into the soil. You can water more frequently for the first week or two and then back off. Your plants roots will grow very quickly and be able to find moisture on their own. To amend with your manure I would not dig up your new plants. I would just scratch it into the top inch or two of soil 3 inches away from your plants stems. It will decompose and the nutrients will wash down to feed your plants. You could even just spread it on top of the soil.

Sound great! I'm growing Pineapple this year for the first time and looking forward to tasting it; I've heard good things. I just planted a tiny seedling of one called Old German and it is growing much better then the plants I planted in mid April; they all have some kind of leaf problem.
