Instant bonus tomato patch!!!!!!!
As I think I mentioned before I said I planted some tomatoes in the dirt in the back yard after scraping away the horse herb.
The reason behind this is that I had some good tomato friends send me seeds for green tomatoes as I have never had one before. ((((Thanks tomato friends))))) I needed to plant them somewhere so I found this spot. It has for years been collecting run off debris from all of the rain and is of a nice red sandy loam soil. I helped some this winter with a little water diversion project I had going on.8) So what the heck I will plant something here. After my return from work I found the plants to be doing great so I figured I would help a little not a lot but just a little. So first I mixed in some composted manure then I loaded up a load of decayed leaves that collects in the front yard in front of the house after it rains and mixed it in. Then I decided to put in a drip system to help the wife water the things this summer.8) If you will notice I started with 9 plants but I did not like the way the drip line would have to be run. So what the heck I had some plants in a holding pattern so I added 3 more so now that makes 12 plants. I just turned up more of the yard with a hoe, a free hoe I might add. I’m just too lazy for raised beds and I don’t think everybody needs them. So here it is. Enjoy Worth Here is the patch after I mixed in all of the good stuff. Attachment 275 Here is how easy it is to dig by hand. Attachment 276 A nice hand full of dirt. Attachment 277 Worm family that lives in the patch they are gonna love this place. Attachment 278 I figured I would test out the new drip system. Attachment 279 Last edited by Worth1; November 17, 2012 at 06:45 PM. |

Worth,
Aren't you worried that using good real dirt and worms and such will make it all too easy to grow tomatoes...then what...just slacking around the house, turn on a valve or two, scratch a dog...quit making so easy. Makes the rest of us feel bad.

Rena and Bob I do suppose you are right.
I guess I am kinda being a jerk. I just cant help myself sometimes. And of course I was raised by a man that could grow tomatoes on a bed of rocks. Besides I'm lazy and a penny pincher. I hope all of you guys enjoyed the pictorial on how you can do this thing without a lot of money and very little time. Now I will get back to scratching my dog and sipping my beer. I have some new tomato names and history's to come up with. To be posted later!!! Tonight Worth |

So that's what good soil looks like. I thought it was supposed to be red and full of clay. If I attempted to stick my hand in my soil I'd break my fingers.

I know the feeling, natural. Our rock... er, I mean, soil.. here is hard packed desert crap... rocky and hard. When we first moved in here, we had a backyard that wouldn't grow anything.. and over the past 8 months or so, we've spend countless days out back with a mattock, shovel, and probably 50 backs of manure, compost, etc.. turning it over, amending it, and generally making it productive.
Worth, good job on the patch there.. looking great!
