First Impressions of new varieties
Last year I grew Rutgers, Big Beef, Early Girl, Better Boy and Bonnie's Pink Beefsteak. We really liked them all but we were not that overwhelmed by any of them to grow them this year. So far this year we've tasted Moskvich, Ugly, Brandy Boy and New Yorker. Except for one Ugly tomato that was really good the rest of the bunch have been so so at best. None of the varieties this year taste as good to us as the ones we grew last year. We're still waiting on some more varieties to ripen so maybe things will get better. If I had to make a choice right now I'd trade them all for any of the varieties we grew last year. They had more tomato taste and still had some measure of firmness even when ripe.

I actually liked Bonnie's Pink Beefsteak. One of those tomatoes you can eat out of hand with a salt shaker - but wasn't too productive for me, and the root knot nematodes seemed to love it and was evidenced when I pulled the plant.
I may give it another whirl in the fall, if any plants are available for an impulse purchase when I am in a big box the next couple of months. |

I'm growing so many for the first time, but the only ones I've tasted so far are Sungold, Rutgers, Mexico Midget, Yellow Pear, and Jet Star. Sungold and Jet Star are by far the best, with Sungold way out front in taste. I have a loaded Brandywine Sudduth, but still a couple weeks out. I should get my first Cherokee Purple in a week.
