tomatoes tasted so far!
So far I've tried the folowing:
Manalucie --really good! will grow again Sioux Quarter Century -these 2 are YUMMY, as always! Gary O' Sena good flavor, not great texture(huge!) Cherokee Purple good, but nothing to write home about(at least I got an edible 1 this year) Rutgers now one of my favorites-really good! Marglobe very good Purple Dog Creek really good- a little too mild for a sandwich, but would be perfect in soup or something like that(haven't tried it yet) I've picked a Ponderosa Red & several Traveler, but they need to sit a couple more days. I'm anxiously awaiting Cherokee , Red Barn, & Giant Belgium --they are all green still. |

Nice report. I am always interested in other gardeners' opinions on taste although it is a subjective area for sure.
Here is my breakdown to date: Matina - average at best, somewhat bland Rita's Black - very tasty, similar to Black Krim and looks like it will be highly productive as well Tennessee Heirloom - I rate this one up there with BW and Earl's Faux for taste. Tangy and fullbodied. Big Burgundy Cherry (growout project) - excellent taste for a cherry, also somewhat tangy New Big Dwarf - always in my garden now, it never fails to produce excellent tasting tomatoes That's it for now. 5 down, 21 more to go. mater Last edited by tomatoguy; July 15, 2008 at 12:29 AM. |

Thanks for the reports. They give me ideas on what to grow next year, or give me a preview of what to expect, if I'm growing one of the varieties this year.

Thanks for the reports. I'm still a ways off in getting some good slicers. I have had a few cherries and my Stupice is pumping out golfball sized treasures. I must say I still prefer Sweet Baby Girl for a red cherry at this point. I think it has a very different, strong tomato taste for a cherry. I've had some BER on several plants so I'm hoping that resolves.

I forgot about Aunt Ginny's Purple-- I ate the 1st one tonite in a sandwich. It was really good! It kind of surprised me because most of the really big ones have not been great so far---it is way above average, in my opinion. (Of course I know posting this originally that everyone's taste is different, but I thought it might also help those in my zone of what will grow well & be tasty)

My husband & I had a sandwich today with the 1st hybrids--- Big Boy & Big Beef. After taking a couple bites, my husband said he would rather have a tomato sandwich with diced tomatoes out of a can than either one of those.

KK,
Aunt Ginny's Purple is a must grow in my garden. Always tastes great. I think several others on TV will agree. |

Tasted thus far (excluding my dwarf project growouts)...
Sweet Baby Girl F1 (cherry) - Nice, crunchy, sweet. Not up to Sungold standards (only about an 8 vs a 8.5-9) but somewhat more compact which is nice with my limited growing area. Black Cherry - Good but not as good as I remember from the tasting I tried it at last fall (only 7.5-8 thus far when I recall a 9). I'm going to try letting some ripen further and see how the flavor shapes up. Red Brandywine - Mmmm... Nicely balanced, juicy. Going to rate this one an 8 for me. My most prolific plant thus far. Definitely coming back as my main cropper next year. The best tasting fruit I'd had to date was actually from one of my dwarf project plants... Summer Sunrise. Juicy, sweet-tart goodness in a nice sized slice! But I have yet to get a taste of many of the flavor heavyweights I have planted yet and these could yet dethrone Summer Sunrise: Brandywine Suddeth, Stump of the World, Persimmon, German Red Strawberry, Aker's West Virginia, etc. For some reason (heat, the freak hailstorm, who knows) most of my in ground indeterminates are just really slow this year. --Justin |
