Indian Stripe x Sungold F2

This is another cross by Bill Jeffers I'm growing this year. The plant is really pumping out the fruit and the one I tasted today was excellent. Here are some pics. Ami

Here is the latest picture of the plant and what you see is the tip of the iceberg as there are several sprays of fruit on the other side of the plant which is in the middle of the greenhouse. Ami

Ami - I have five F2's this year, just now setting fruit. I'm assuming you have F1 plants, are you also growing F2 plants this year? What are you seeing?

I have five F2 progeny plants this year, and they are just now far enough along to look at fruit characteristics. Four of the five are large cherries, the first of which is just starting to turn color. The outlier is looking like a small beefsteak type, which surprized me some.

I'm really looking forward to this particular cross since I have become a fan of Sungold and Indian Stripe.

Please let me know if test growers are needed in my geographical area. It would be a pleasure to grow this cross.

Since the cross is similar to the Sungold X CP, I can comment on the beefsteak charachteristic. Maybe, 3-4 out of 25 will give fruit like this. The dark charachteristic may show up in 25% of the F2. The primary difference between the CP cross and the IS cross is that I think bill used Indian stripe as the mother. I used SG as the mother. I actually started 15 plants of the IS cross(seeds from bill) last fall but they all got overtaken by disease and was not able to get fruit. Still got quite a few seed, but of course I am heavily growing out the CP cross now. Also of tnote is that in the CP crosses F1 fruit their are both orange(bicolor) and Red. As I recall the IS cross only gave red in the F1.

I now have ripe fruit on three of six F2 plants, one is a small bright red cherry and the other two look like the photo below - red/purple medium cherries w/ green shoulders. Flavor and texture are extraordinary on all three, but especially on the purples. They are sweet, but not too - with plenty of tomatoey flavor and acid to balance. The latest and last three are larger fruited and just thinking about turning color - all have dark green shoulders at this stage. I think there will be some great stabilized varieties out of both this and Vince's CP x Sungold cross.

How large are the larger fruits now that they are breaking color?

Travis - the two "large ones" that are turning are the size of a billiard ball.

Nice looking toms. Are they purple or brown? In other words is the skin colorless or orange?

This is really great since you can do, in time, a side by side taste and morphologic comparison between the IS and CP browns. Very exciting!
Maybe Bill will even get back in the game.
