extreme BER? or what?

Someone in a local gardening group had tomatoes that looked like they had BER, but it was in the whole bottom half of the tomato and there was a straight line dividing the red top half of the tomato from the green-brown whatever on the bottom half. Has anyone else seen this? What is it?

Sounds like extreme BER to me.

Yep I have had some like that when you do not seem them covered up by the foliage they look like a half tomato and completely flat on the bottom.

When I've seen it on my tomatoes, often it's a small sunken spot. I didn't see the actual tomatoes, but from the photos, they look as if something else may be going on besides the BER. The tomatoes in the last photo look especially peculiar.

I didn't ask her about the variety, but I'd guess they're Palo Alto, a "new" variety that they decided to name this year after calling it not-Heidi for a few years. The original plant came from a Heidi seed packet (and was obviously not Heidi), and the grower liked it so much that she saved seed. This year I saw one plant with many very large tomatoes, including one that looked like a pound plus.

I do not know of anything else other than BER that looks
like that. The second picture does have some strange spots
on the fruit on the left, but that could be on top of BER that
was already there.

Were the symptoms seen on more than one plant? If so, were
they seen on plants of more than just this one type of cultivar?
