Persimmons from seed
I just wondered if anyone had successfully germinated persimmons from seed? From what I've been reading, the seed needs to pass thru a bird's stomach to germinate. I was thinking to do an oxiclean soak or something like that, then trying to winter sow.
Any other ideas?

I've provided a link on persimmons seeds and it doesn't appear that you'll need the seed to go thru the birds digestive tract to germinate. It will need cold stratifacation. and it appears a extended germination time of 6 to 8 weeks after the stratifacation. Good luck on growing this neat tree!! George thank you! I've got several trees in the fenceline way at the back of the property, but they are a nice looking tree and I thought it would be fun to plant some in the landscape.
I'll put the seeds in the fridge now and plant them when I start my tomatoes.

barbee,
Just want to backup gee bosses statement about cold stratification of seeds to encourage seed germination. It works. Let us know of your success with the persimmons. Happy Matering, Paul |

I tried to germinate persimmon seeds last year and they didn't work. I only stratified for about a week. Maybe they need longer.

I've got them in the fridge now, in a ziplock bag of potting soil. I'll update when I take them out. Planning to do that about March.
I germinated buckeyes this way years ago, so I'm hoping it's along the same line.

For most trees, I prefer potting them up and then sticking the pots outside over the winter...try to mimic the natural process as much as possible. Or keep them in the fridge until February or so (with maybe a couple of weeks in the freezer).
