Emasculating PL
OK I have successfully emasculated plenty of RL flowers, but today I went to do the same to a PL and just mutilated the poor flower. First: Do I need to emasculate PL flowers to get a successful cross? Second: If I need to...how?
Thanks! |

Pick a different flower. PL flowers are no different than RL except for the fact that most PL are beefsteak so there will be a large proporton of funky fused blossoms. Just keep going until you find a normally shaped blossom. It will be one of the average sized or smaller buds.
I tried simply coating open Brandywine flowers last year with RL pollen and the success was rather low (10%-20%) because self pollenation had begun before I got there. I ended up dense planting and pulling out the few RL plants for grow out. |
