nangisha that is some strange ginger in the picture! It kinda looks like normal ginger that is hosting red phoma rot (fungus) this produces some beautiful colors although technically it is a disease.

I can not found the exact picture at the internet. Its usually small with mahogany red skin and If I go to fresh market I will take the picture and post it here.

Last summer I planted two clumps (hands?) of ginger from the supermarket in a large pot of potting soil, about 1/2 inch down. As I remember, both were from central American countries, but I don't remember which. Anyway, every so often I lift them to see if there is any progress - so far I see small healthy-looking buds and the clumps seem to be in good health, but no roots or leaves yet. The soil is slightly damp, and the pot has been in an unheated greenhouse all winter - outside temperatures went below freezing, but inside stayed above. It's warm now, up to 90 degrees in the greenhouse during the day (peak temperature.) I'm very curious to see how this turns out, because I love to cook with ginger. Dave
