Darn shame to dig up all of that nice grass just for tomatoes and beans.
That field in the back looks like a good spot going to waste. Nice garden. 8) |

Wow, those are ALL very nice gardens. So neat and tidy--I'd be afraid to do a long distance shot of my beds. Where are all the weeds and garden junk?
I just had two truckloads of tree-trimmings dumped--thought I would use the mulch around the raised beds to drown out the weeds. When I went out to look at what I got looks like big sticks and broken branches, not mulch at all. Got TWO 18 yards dump trucks full of the stuff. They were about to dump a third when I ran out to stop them. Oh well, we put it around the beds anyway but it sure is ugly. Much better luck last next week- DH picked up at least 8 truckloads of stumpgrindings. Our city was finally grinding tree stumps destroyed by WIlma on the city swales. Man said to take as much as he wanted and then they actually delivered a truckload to our house. I am going to mix it into the beds for organic matter. What alot of work for some measly tomatoes. OK forget the measly part--don't really mean it and something like that could get me banned.

Tomato blasphemy, if I ever saw it. Seriously, I hope all's growing well for you down there in sunny Florida, MsCowpea.

I didn't stake last year and just used garden-center tomato cages stuck as far as I could push them into my raised bed. I had pretty good luck until right at the end of the season when the cages started to topple. It wasn't a huge issue for me because I had seven plants and I'm the only fresh-tom eater in my family -- even with the plants laying on the ground I had plenty for myself and shared with a neighbor. But it did look like crap, and this year I'm hoping to do some freezing and canning, so I'm trying a florida weave system.
I bolted pressure-treated 8' 2x2s to the boards forming each end of the bed. The weakest link is probably the boards themselves, which are untreated 1x12s I put in last year and which are already showing signs of deterioration. Val |

I'm using the Florida Weave for the first time too. You can see mine, a few posts earlier. When that picture was taken, I only had one string supporting the tomatoes. I've since needed to add a second, and will probably need to add a third this week.

after all this rain,
all plants that are staked def. need tying !!! ~ Tom ps. I learned the hard way as the wind was blowing quite hard and bent some stems ~ More tying to be done !

John,
I'm glad you asked - I got seeds for "Grandpa Limbaughs Red Potato Top" - 1 Plant came up PL (true) - 1 Plant came up RL (cross) ~ What you see is the RL plant towering over the rest of my garden, with 20+ beefsteaks still green !!! I'm going to save seed, and try to stabilize ~ That IS if flavor is good > > > Tom ps. will take pics of green toms tomorrow morning and post ~
